Short-term adjunctive treatment for weight-loss therapy in exogenous obesity
This medication is used as an adjunct therapy for weight loss. It is particularly effective for patients with exogenous obesity who do not respond to appropriate dietary control and exercise therapy. It is primarily recommended for individuals with an initial body mass index (BMI) of 30 or more, or for individuals with a BMI of 27 or more who have risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia. This medication should be used in conjunction with a weight loss program based on exercise, behavior modification, and caloric restriction, and should not be used with other appetite suppressants. With consistent use, it can assist in short-term weight loss and help maintain a healthy body condition. Thus, it is advisable to use this medication for weight control.
Adults: Administer 37.5 mg of phentermine hydrochloride orally once daily, before breakfast or 1 ~ 2 hours after breakfast. Use the minimum effective dose, adjusting it individually to achieve an adequate response. A dose of 18.75 mg once daily may be appropriate for some patients; in some cases, 18.75 mg twice daily may be preferable. Avoid taking this medicine late at night because it may cause insomnia. This medicine should be administered for a short period (within 4 weeks). However, to reduce the risk of inappropriate use and associated risks, treatment with this medicine may be continued if the patient achieves satisfactory weight loss within the first 4 weeks (weight loss of at least 1.8 kg, or weight loss considered satisfactory by both the physician and the patient).
This medication should not be used in conjunction with other appetite suppressants, and it should be used alone for a short duration. Taking this medication alongside other weight loss drugs is not recommended as safety and efficacy have not been verified. Symptoms related to primary pulmonary hypertension may occur, so if symptoms such as dyspnea, angina, syncope, or lower extremity edema occur, you must inform your doctor immediately. There may be a risk associated with valvular heart disease, so care must be taken to avoid long-term high-dose use or co-administration with other appetite suppressants. This medication should not be used in patients with advanced atherosclerosis, cardiovascular diseases, severe hypertension, pulmonary hypertension, hyperthyroidism, or glaucoma. People allergic to this medication or hypersensitive to sympathomimetic amines, and those who are mentally agitated or excited should not take this product. Children under 16 years of age and women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication. Patients with diabetes or mild hypertension should use this medication cautiously, and patients with diabetes may need insulin dose adjustments. Overdosing may lead to severe toxic symptoms and cardiovascular anomalies, so it is important to start with the minimum dose initially and avoid excess. This medication affects the central nervous system and may cause side effects such as anxiety, insomnia, and headaches; caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. Alcohol should be avoided as it may exacerbate side effects. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should only use this medication when necessary and under a doctor's supervision due to potential risks to the fetus or infant. This medication is classified as a narcotic, with a risk of dependence and abuse; therefore, it must be used strictly according to a doctor's instructions. Long-term use of this medication may lead to psychological abnormal symptoms or serious side effects, so any unusual symptoms should be discussed with healthcare professionals immediately.
