It improves blood sugar control in patients and assists in diabetes treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

The initial dose is 500mg of Metformin Hydrochloride Extended-Release once daily with the evening meal. After a week, the blood sugar level should be measured to adjust the dosage, with a maximum dose of 2000mg per day. The dosage may be increased by 500mg weekly, and up to a maximum of 2000mg can be taken once daily with the evening meal. If blood sugar control is not achieved at the maximum dose of 2000mg once daily, consider 1000mg twice daily with meals.

Precautions

This medication can rarely cause a dangerous condition known as severe lactic acidosis, so immediate consultation with medical professionals is necessary if symptoms appear. Care should be taken to be aware of the risk of hypoglycemia when using this medication alongside other diabetes medications. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment or those with acute illnesses such as severe infection or heart failure should not use this medication. Especially when undergoing tests using radiologic iodine contrast agents, the use of this medication should be stopped, and renal function checked before resuming. This medication is not used in patients with hypersensitivity to it or in those with type 1 diabetes. In cases of severe infection or major surgery, treatment should be temporarily suspended and resumed once the condition stabilizes. Patients with poor nutritional status or impaired liver function, as well as those with excessive alcohol consumption, also require caution. Gastrointestinal disturbances may commonly occur with this medication; thus, starting the dose slowly and taking it with food is recommended. Regular blood tests are recommended due to the potential for vitamin B12 deficiency. This medication should be swallowed whole without chewing or crushing, and the tablet coating may appear in the stool, which is normal. During pregnancy, fetal growth should be closely monitored, and during breastfeeding, it is advisable to avoid using this medication. Elderly patients may be at risk for reduced kidney function, so dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests are required. In case of overdose, blood dialysis may be necessary, and immediate medical attention should be sought. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication and be mindful of interactions with other medications, especially those that may affect kidney function. Regular checks of blood sugar levels and prompt reporting of unusual symptoms to a physician are important.
