Treatment of herpes zoster; treatment and suppression of recurrence of genital herpes; treatment and suppression of herpes simplex
This medication is effectively used for infections caused by the herpes virus, such as herpes zoster and genital herpes. It is particularly helpful in treating and suppressing herpes zoster and herpes simplex in patients with impaired immune function. Additionally, it can be used in cream form for the treatment of cold sores. It is available in various dosages that can be appropriately selected based on the patient's condition. Overall, this medication is used to improve and treat various symptoms resulting from herpes virus infections.
1. Treatment of herpes zoster Adults: Administer famciclovir 250 mg orally 3 times daily for 7 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 2. Treatment of first-episode genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this drug orally 3 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 3. Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 125 mg of this drug orally 2 times daily for 5 days. It is preferable to start treatment during the prodromal period or as soon as symptoms appear after infection. 4. Suppression of recurrent genital herpes Adults: Administer 250 mg of this drug orally 2 times daily. Periodically discontinue treatment every 6~12 months to assess whether the natural course of the disease has changed. 5. Patients with renal impairment: Since creatinine clearance of this drug is reduced in patients with renal impairment, dose adjustment should be performed with caution. The dosage and administration for these patients are as follows. 1) Treatment of herpes zoster and first-episode genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 250 mg per dose, 1 time daily 2) Treatment of acute recurrent genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, 1 time daily 3) Suppression of recurrent genital herpes: Creatinine clearance (mL/min/1.73㎡) Dose 30~59 250 mg per dose, 2 times daily 10~29 125 mg per dose, 2 times daily 4) If only serum creatinine is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formula. Men: {weight (kg) × (140-age)}/ {72 × serum creatinine (mg/dL)} Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men 5) Patients with renal impairment undergoing hemodialysis It is preferable to administer the drug every 48 hours, taking the dialysis interval into account. Since 4 hours of hemodialysis reduces the plasma concentration of this drug by approximately 75%, administer this drug immediately after dialysis. The recommended dose is 250mg for patients with herpes zoster and 125mg for patients with genital herpes. 6. Patients with hepatic impairment: No dose adjustment is necessary in patients with chronic compensated liver disease. There is insufficient treatment experience in patients with overt chronic decompensated liver disease; therefore, a clear recommended dose has not been established.
This medication should not be used by patients who are allergic to any of its components. Due to the presence of lactose, patients with lactose intolerance or certain genetic metabolic disorders should not take it. Patients with poor renal function should use this medication with caution, and dosage adjustments may be necessary. During treatment with this medication, side effects such as headaches, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and skin rashes may occur, so consult a doctor if unusual symptoms arise. This drug does not cure genital herpes, so avoid sexual contact during symptomatic periods and maintain safe sexual practices. If central nervous system symptoms such as dizziness or drowsiness occur, avoid driving or operating machinery. Patients with slightly impaired liver function do not require special dosage adjustments, but severe liver impairment may reduce drug efficacy, so caution is advised. There may be interactions when taken with other medications, especially those affecting renal excretion, so side effects should be monitored. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should only use this medication when absolutely necessary, as its safety has not been fully established. Safety and efficacy in children under 18 years of age have not been confirmed, so use is not recommended. Generally, elderly patients do not require dosage adjustments, but those with reduced renal function may need dosage adjustments. In case of overdose, seek medical attention immediately and blood dialysis can reduce drug concentration. Store this medication in a dry place below 30 degrees Celsius, and keep it out of reach of children. Transferring the medication to another container may pose risks of accidents or degradation, so always maintain the original packaging.
