Cefuroxime is a broad-spectrum cephalosporin antibiotic that is effective against various bacteria, used for upper respiratory infections such as otitis media, sinusitis, tonsillitis, and pharyngitis. It is also effective in treating lower respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis and pneumonia. In urogenital infections, it is utilized for pyelonephritis, cystitis, and urethritis. It can also be applied for skin infections such as furunculosis, impetigo, and pyoderma. It helps treat uncomplicated acute gonococcal urethritis and gonococcal cervicitis and is used for early Lyme disease. This drug has strong resistance to beta-lactamase, providing effective treatment options even for resistant strains.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with hypersensitivity to cephalosporin antibiotics. Caution should be exercised in patients with a history of allergy to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics, patients prone to allergic symptoms such as bronchial asthma, skin rashes, and urticaria, and patients with severely impaired renal function. Although this drug typically shows mild and transient adverse reactions, serious skin reactions, blood abnormalities, liver dysfunction, and renal impairment can occur rarely, necessitating careful monitoring. Dizziness, headaches, or gastrointestinal symptoms may occur during use, and if severe diarrhea or abdominal pain occurs, immediate consultation with a healthcare professional is required. To prevent the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria, it is advisable to administer this medication for the minimum necessary duration. While taking this drug, allergic reactions or shock symptoms may occur, therefore, attention should be paid to symptoms, and if symptoms such as discomfort, oral mucosa abnormalities, wheezing, dizziness, or sweating appear, the administration should be stopped immediately. Additionally, this drug may lead to excessive proliferation of Candida or serious gastrointestinal diseases such as pseudomembranous colitis, so caution is needed for long-term use. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery due to the possibility of dizziness. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should carefully consider the benefits and risks of using this drug if needed, as the medication can be transmitted through breast milk. Caution is also necessary for children, especially infants under 3 months of age, as safety has not been established, and atypical syrup formulations are advisable for young children due to the unpleasant taste. Elderly patients may experience more adverse reactions due to decreased physiological functions and increased risk of bleeding due to vitamin K deficiency, hence careful adjustment of dosage and intervals is necessary. This medication may affect the results of certain clinical tests, so informing the healthcare professional during testing is important. In case of overdose, convulsions due to brain stimulation may occur, so immediate medical attention should be sought. Finally, this medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container with the lid tightly closed to ensure safety.
