This drug is effective against various bacteria including Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Pneumococcus, Gonococcus, and Escherichia coli. It is used for the treatment of complicated skin and soft tissue infections, respiratory infections such as chronic bronchitis, acute pyelonephritis, urinary tract infections, bacterial dysentery and enteritis, infections of the uterus and adnexa in women, various inflammations of the eyes and ears, sinusitis, periodontitis, cholecystitis, and cholangitis. However, due to the risk of serious adverse reactions associated with fluoroquinolone antibiotics, it is recommended to be used only when other treatment options are unavailable. Considering these factors, it is used effectively in the treatment of your infection.

How to take

Adult dose

For typical adult use, levofloxacin is taken orally at a dose of 100 mg, 2 to 3 times per day. For severe cases or when response is inadequate, the dose may be increased to 200 mg, 3 times per day. Adjustments should be made according to age and symptoms.

Precautions

This drug is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and is used for the treatment of specific bacterial infections. However, it may cause tendon-related problems such as tendonitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, adverse central nervous system reactions, and exacerbation of myasthenia gravis, thus caution should be exercised. If serious adverse reaction symptoms appear, the use of this drug should be discontinued immediately, and it should not be administered to patients with myasthenia gravis. Additionally, it should only be used when there are no other treatment options in cases of acute bacterial non-sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, simple urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media. Care should be taken when administering this drug to elderly patients, patients with decreased renal function, solid organ transplant patients, and when used in conjunction with corticosteroids, as the risk of tendon rupture increases. Also, if taken along with corticosteroids, the risk of tendonitis or tendon rupture increases, so steroid medications should not be used during this treatment. Patients with myasthenia gravis may experience worsening symptoms when taking this drug, and therefore it should be administered very cautiously. It should not be used in patients with allergic reactions or hypersensitivity to this drug, those with a history of tendonitis or tendon rupture due to this drug, individuals under 18 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and patients with epilepsy. Dosage should be cautiously determined for patients with severely impaired renal function, those with a history of cerebrovascular disease or seizures, patients taking certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or theophylline, diabetic patients, patients with glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, those with a history of aortic aneurysm or valvular heart disease. This medication can cause serious allergic reactions, neuropsychiatric symptoms (insomnia, dizziness, hallucinations, seizures, delirium, disorientation, attention deficits, nightmares, sleep disorders, suicidal thoughts, etc.), cardiac arrhythmias, renal and liver dysfunction, blood abnormalities, gastrointestinal issues, musculoskeletal abnormalities, and severe skin reactions (Stevens-Johnson syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, etc.). In addition, this drug may cause photosensitivity reactions, so strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure should be avoided, and caution should be exercised when driving or operating machinery if dizziness or drowsiness occurs. This drug may interact with various medications, so caution is needed when taken with antacids, iron, calcium, vitamins, theophylline, warfarin, cyclosporine, probenecid, cimetidine, etc. Especially when used in combination with diabetic medications, blood glucose fluctuations may occur, necessitating careful monitoring of blood glucose levels. It should not be administered to pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, breastfeeding mothers, or growing children and adolescents. Elderly patients may experience increased serum levels due to diminished renal function, and there is an increased risk of hepatotoxicity and aortic-related adverse reactions, hence dose adjustment and monitoring are required. In case of overdose, central nervous system symptoms and cardiac side effects may occur; prompt treatment is needed, and this drug is not removed through hemodialysis or peritoneal dialysis. It is crucial to consult healthcare professionals immediately for appropriate action in case of any adverse symptoms while taking this drug.
