Efficacy & effects

Improvement in blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes

  • Abnormal blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used to improve blood sugar control in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is administered as an adjunct to dietary therapy and exercise to help manage blood sugar effectively. It can also be used as monotherapy, and if blood sugar control is insufficient, it can be combined with other oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. Especially when efficacy is lacking with sulfonylureas or metformin alone, it can be combined with metformin to improve blood sugar control. This medication helps patients manage their blood sugar more stably and aids in diabetes treatment.

How to take

Adult dose

Individually adjusted for each patient. Administered orally once daily, swallowed without chewing with more than ½ cup of water. Should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. For monotherapy, the initial dose is 1 mg of glimepiride once a day, starting with the lowest effective dose and increasing by 1 mg at intervals of 1 to 2 weeks. Generally, a maximum of 4 mg can be administered, and if necessary, it can be increased to 6 mg or 8 mg.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or in a state of coma. Patients who have had allergic reactions to this medication or to sulfonylureas or sulfonamides should also not be administered this medication. There is no experience of use in patients with severely impaired liver or kidney function, and in such cases, transitioning to insulin therapy is recommended. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant, as well as those who are breastfeeding, should not take this medication. In patients with severe infections, before and after surgery, or in cases of severe trauma, insulin therapy is needed, so this medication should not be used. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting may experience absorption issues, leading to an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is advised. During the first week of taking this medication, there is an increased risk of hypoglycemia, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. Special caution should be taken for the elderly, those in poor nutritional status or who eat irregularly, as well as those who frequently consume alcohol, as they are at higher risk for hypoglycemia. Patients with weakened kidney or liver function or other endocrine disorders may also respond sensitively to this medication, requiring caution. Additionally, when taking this medication with other drugs, it is essential to inform your doctor or pharmacist due to potential interactions affecting blood sugar control. This medication has blood sugar-lowering effects, so hypoglycemic symptoms may occur. Symptoms may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, anxiety, decreased concentration, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, among others. In severe cases, it can lead to seizures or coma, so if symptoms occur, immediately consume sugar or seek medical assistance. Moreover, temporary blurred vision can occur in the initial stages of taking this medication, and gastrointestinal issues, liver function abnormalities, blood abnormalities, and allergic reactions may rarely occur. If severe allergic symptoms or skin rashes are observed, discontinue use immediately and consult a doctor. To use this medication effectively, it should be taken regularly alongside dietary and exercise therapies. In case of hypoglycemia, foods or drinks containing sugar should be ingested promptly to restore blood sugar levels, as artificial sweeteners are ineffective. Particularly during the initial administration or when adjusting the dosage, careful observation for hypoglycemic symptoms is necessary, and caution is required when driving or operating machinery. This medication may interact with other drugs, so if you are taking other medications, it is crucial to inform your healthcare provider. Particularly, co-administration with some antibiotics, antifungals, steroids, beta-blockers, etc. can affect blood sugar regulation. Additionally, alcohol consumption can unpredictably alter the efficacy of this medication, requiring caution. Women who are pregnant or nursing should not use this medication as it may pose risks to the fetus or newborn, and switching to insulin therapy is advisable. The safety and efficacy of this medication in children under 18 years old have not been established, so it should not be used in this age group. Elderly patients may have decreased kidney function, so careful dose adjustment is necessary, with particular attention to the risk of hypoglycemia. In case of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, requiring immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment. This medication should be stored out of reach of children and kept in its original container to maintain its quality.
