Treatment of psychiatric disorders (depression and obsessive-compulsive disorder), bulimia nervosa, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder
This medication is used to treat depression, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. It improves symptoms commonly seen in depression patients, such as low mood, changes in appetite and sleep, and fatigue, with effects typically appearing within 5 to 6 weeks. In bulimia nervosa, it helps reduce behaviors associated with binge eating. In obsessive-compulsive disorder, it alleviates the discomfort caused by obsessions and compulsions. In premenstrual dysphoric disorder, it alleviates physical and emotional symptoms, reducing interference in social and work life. This medication has a positive effect on improving the symptoms of each disorder.
Adults 1. Depression 1) Initial treatment: The initial dose is fluoxetine hydrochloride 20mg orally once daily in the morning. In controlled clinical trials, doses of 20~80mg daily were administered. If no improvement is observed, a dose increase may be considered after several weeks. Doses exceeding 20mg daily should be administered in 2 divided doses (morning and noon), and the maximum dose of 80mg daily should not be exceeded. The onset of an adequate antidepressant effect may be delayed until 4 weeks or longer after starting treatment. 2) Maintenance/continuation/extended treatment: There are no definitive data on how long patients should be treated with this medicine; however, psychopharmacologists recognize that acute episodes of depression require several months or longer of drug treatment. It is not known whether the amount of antidepressant needed to relieve symptoms is the same as that needed to maintain or sustain remission. 2. Bulimia nervosa Administer 60mg of this medicine daily. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. Measure electrolyte concentrations before starting treatment. 3. Obsessive-compulsive disorder Administer 20~60mg of this medicine daily. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. 4. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Administer 20mg of this medicine daily. Reassess whether continued treatment is necessary after 6 months of treatment. Patients with renal and/or hepatic impairment, patients receiving multiple medicines, elderly patients, and patients with comorbid conditions: Administer a low dose or reduce the frequency of administration. Adjust the dose appropriately according to age and symptoms. Switching from or to MAO inhibitors for the treatment of psychiatric disorders When discontinuing an MAO inhibitor used to treat psychiatric disorders and starting treatment with this medicine, allow an interval of at least 14 days. Conversely, at least 5 weeks must elapse after discontinuing this medicine before starting an MAO inhibitor for the treatment of psychiatric disorders. Other MAO inhibitors, such as linezolid or methylene blue Patients receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue should not start treatment with this medicine because of the increased risk of serotonin syndrome. In patients who require more urgent treatment for a psychiatric condition, including hospitalization or other interventions, treatment should be considered. It may be necessary to urgently administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue to a patient already receiving this medicine. If no alternative to linezolid or intravenous methylene blue is available and, for a particular patient, the benefits of treatment with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue are judged to outweigh the risk of serotonin syndrome, this medicine may be stopped immediately and linezolid or intravenous methylene blue administered. Monitor the patient for symptoms of serotonin syndrome for 5 weeks after administration of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or until 24 hours after the last dose, whichever occurs first. Treatment with this medicine may be resumed 24 hours after the last dose of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. The risk associated with administration of methylene blue by a non-intravenous route (oral tablets or local injection), or with intravenous administration of this medicine at a dose of 1mg/kg or less, is unclear. Nevertheless, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of emergency symptoms of serotonin syndrome with these uses.
This medication is primarily used to treat psychiatric conditions such as depression. Caution is needed when taking this medication, especially in children, adolescents, and young adults aged 18 to 24, as there is an increased risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors. This medication should not be given to certain patients, including those with allergies to this drug or its additives, patients with severe renal dysfunction, and those currently using MAO inhibitors. Additionally, caution should be exercised in patients with a history of seizures, high suicide risk, manic episodes, heart disease, decreased liver or kidney function, diabetes, and those at risk of increased intraocular pressure. Common side effects during treatment can include headache, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, diarrhea, and rare occurrences of allergic reactions, blood dyscrasias, cardiac arrhythmias, bleeding, and skin rashes. Behavioral changes such as suicidal thoughts, aggression, anxiety, and restlessness can occur during the initial dosing or when changing the dosage. Patients and caregivers should carefully observe for these symptoms and consult a physician if any concerning signs occur. This medication may interact with other drugs, so it is essential to inform a physician if other medications, supplements, or alcohol are being taken or planned to be taken. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult a physician before using this medication, as it may affect the fetus or newborn, and breastfeeding may need to be discontinued if necessary. This medication has not been established as safe and effective for children and adolescents and should be used cautiously in older adults. When discontinuing this medication, do not stop abruptly; the dosage should be gradually reduced under a doctor's guidance, as sudden cessation may lead to withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, anxiety, and headaches. This medication should be stored out of the reach of children and not transferred to other containers.
