Treatment of respiratory (bronchitis, pneumonia) and urinary (cystitis, urethritis) infections
This medication is used for respiratory infections such as acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. It is effective for the treatment of urinary infections including cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis. It is also applicable for the treatment of gonorrhea and pelvic infections. It is used for skin and soft tissue infections such as boils, abscesses, cellulitis, and wound infections. Additionally, it helps in the treatment of osteomyelitis and dental infections. It is effective against various bacteria and used for the treatment of multiple infectious diseases.
Adults and children aged 12 or over or weighing 40 kg or more are administered 250 mg/125 mg of amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium orally, three times a day at intervals of 8 hours; in cases of severe respiratory infections, it can be adjusted to 500 mg/125 mg per dose. For patients with renal impairment, the dosage should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance. - Creatinine clearance 10 to 30 mL/min: 250 to 500 mg of amoxicillin twice daily.
For children under 12 years or those weighing less than 40 kg, the dosage should be appropriately reduced following the same method.
This medication is a beta-lactam antibiotic and should not be administered to patients allergic to penicillin or cephalosporins. Patients with infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia should be cautious when using this medication as the risk of rash may increase. Patients with a history of liver function issues should be careful, as symptoms may reappear after using this medication. Patients with impaired liver function or severe renal disease may experience increased drug concentration, necessitating dosage adjustments or modifications in medication intervals. Patients with allergies or gastrointestinal issues such as vomiting and diarrhea may not effectively absorb the medication, so caution is needed. This medication may cause diarrhea, gastritis, and vomiting in the gastrointestinal system, and in severe cases, serious side effects such as pseudomembranous colitis may occur. Elevated liver enzymes, hepatitis, jaundice, and other liver-related abnormalities may manifest, particularly reported more frequently among the elderly and males. Rarely, allergic reactions such as skin rash, itching, severe skin conditions, or anaphylaxis may occur, and if unusual symptoms arise, medication should be stopped immediately. Blood disorders may occur, including leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, and anemia; hence, blood tests are necessary for prolonged use. Neurological issues such as anxiety, drowsiness, or seizures may occur rarely, and patients with impaired kidney function may experience severe kidney problems such as acute renal failure. This medication can disrupt the intestinal bacterial balance, causing conditions like candidiasis or stomatitis. Long-term use may lead to vitamin K deficiency that increases bleeding risks; thus, the elderly or patients at risk of vitamin deficiency should be cautious. This medication may interact with other drugs, particularly anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory drugs, and oral contraceptives; consulting a physician or pharmacist is advised when used together. Pregnant women, especially in early pregnancy, may face risks when using this medication, and it should only be used when necessary. While breastfeeding, monitoring for adverse effects on the baby is advised. Not recommended for children under 12 years of age or those weighing less than 40 kg. Elderly patients may have decreased body functions, which could lead to side effects appearing more easily; therefore, careful adjustment of dosage and intervals is needed. During this medication, some clinical tests, such as urine sugar tests, may yield affected results, so this should be noted during testing. In case of overdose, symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, renal failure, and seizures may occur, necessitating immediate medical attention for appropriate treatment.
