(Respiratory infections, urinary tract infections) Treatment of bacterial infections
This medication is used to treat various infections caused by different bacteria. It treats acute and chronic bronchitis, pneumonia, empyema, and lung abscesses, as well as upper respiratory infections such as tonsillitis, sinusitis, and otitis media. It is also effective for urinary tract infections like cystitis, urethritis, and pyelonephritis. The medication is used for skin and soft tissue infections such as pelvic inflammatory disease, gonorrhea, boils, abscesses, cellulitis, and wound infections. It is also helpful in treating severe osteomyelitis and dental infections. This medication is used to improve the symptoms of infection and to assist in healing against various bacteria.
Adults and children aged 12 years or older or weighing 40 kg or more should take amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium at a dose of 250 mg/125 mg orally three times a day every 8 hours. In cases of severe or respiratory infections, the dosage may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg. In patients with renal impairment, the dose should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance, with no adjustment necessary for those above 30 mL/min. For creatinine clearance of 10-
Pediatric patients are classified as those weighing less than 40 kg, and under 12 years are considered children. The dosing for children should be adjusted by reducing the adult dosage.
As a beta-lactam antibiotic, this medication should not be administered to patients who have had hypersensitivity reactions to penicillin or cephalosporin drugs. Patients with infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia are at higher risk of rash and should be handled with caution. Patients with a history of liver dysfunction should be cautious as this medication may trigger a recurrence of liver dysfunction. Patients with liver impairment should be careful, as its use can worsen liver function. In patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, drug plasma concentration may increase, thus dosing intervals should be adjusted. Allergy-prone individuals or those with a history of bronchial asthma, skin rash, or hives may experience worsening symptoms while using this medication. Patients who have difficulty swallowing, elderly patients, or those with poor general health should be careful, as vitamin K deficiency symptoms may arise. Patients with gastrointestinal disorders such as vomiting or diarrhea should be cautious, as drug absorption may be insufficient. This medication can cause various gastrointestinal side effects, particularly diarrhea and gastroenteritis, in which case, usage should be stopped immediately if symptoms are severe. Abnormal liver function symptoms may also occur, particularly in the elderly and males, and are reported more frequently. Rarely, severe skin allergic reactions may occur, so if rashes or itching develop, intake should be stopped immediately. Blood-related adverse reactions such as leukopenia and thrombocytopenia have been reported infrequently, necessitating regular blood tests. Central nervous system symptoms such as anxiety, confusion, and seizures may occur rarely, and caution is needed in patients with impaired kidney function. In severe renal impairment, acute renal failure or interstitial nephritis may develop, so regular kidney function tests are recommended. Long-term use carries the risk of resistant bacteria and overgrowth of non-susceptible bacteria, thus monitoring is required for treatments lasting more than 14 days. A thorough history should be obtained before administration to check for a history of hypersensitivity to penicillin as serious allergic reactions may develop. Anaphylactic shock can occur, therefore patient states should be closely monitored after administration and emergency care should be prepared. If diarrhea occurs during or after antibiotic use, clostridium difficile infection must be suspected, and immediate medical attention is necessary. This medication may interact with other drugs, so special caution should be taken for patients currently taking anticoagulants, anti-inflammatory drugs, or oral contraceptives. Women who are pregnant or could become pregnant should avoid administration during the first trimester, and breastfeeding mothers should observe their infants for adverse reactions. It is not recommended for children under 12 years or those weighing less than 40 kg. Elderly individuals may exhibit adverse reactions more easily due to decreased body function and should have their dosing and intervals adjusted carefully. This medication may affect certain clinical test results, such as urine sugar tests, and should be considered during testing. In case of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms, renal failure, seizures, or hypersensitivity shock may be observed, and immediate cessation and proper treatment should be sought. This medication should be stored in a dry place at temperatures below 25 degrees Celcius, and its use should be limited as per doctor's instructions when not needed.
