Improves blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication is used in conjunction with dietary and exercise therapy to help control blood sugar in patients with type 2 diabetes. It can also be administered alone and can be used when blood sugar control is difficult with oral hypoglycemic agents or insulin. Particularly, it improves blood sugar control when alone or in combination with sulfonylureas or metformin fails. In this way, this medication effectively aids in the blood sugar control of type 2 diabetes, improving the health of patients.
Individual dose adjustment is made for each patient. Take without chewing with more than 1/2 cup of water. Administer orally once a day. Should be taken before breakfast or immediately before the first meal. It is very important not to skip meals after taking this medication. As monotherapy, the initial dose is 1 mg once daily of glyburide, which can be increased by 1 mg at intervals of 1-2 weeks. Generally, when 4 mg or more has been administered, additional effectiveness is minimal, but some patients showed better metabolic control when the dosage was increased to 6 mg (or 8 mg). If 4 mg daily fails, first consider switching to insulin therapy; if not, consider combining with insulin or other oral diabetic medications.
This medication should not be administered to patients with insulin-dependent diabetes, diabetic ketoacidosis, or those in a comatose state. Patients with a known allergy to this medication, its components, or sulfonylurea medications should also avoid its use. For patients with severely diminished liver or kidney function, it is recommended to switch to insulin treatment instead of using this medication. Pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, as well as nursing mothers, should not take this medication. Patients with severe infections, those undergoing surgery, or those who have suffered major trauma may require insulin treatment, so caution should be exercised when using this medication. Gastrointestinal disorders such as diarrhea or vomiting may lead to improper absorption of food, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication contains lactose, so patients with genetic disorders such as lactose intolerance, lactose enzyme deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption should not use it. There is a higher risk of hypoglycemia initially after starting treatment, so blood sugar levels should be monitored very carefully, especially in cases of poor nutritional status, skipping meals, or an imbalance in exercise and carbohydrate intake. Patients consuming alcohol, patients with weak kidney or liver function, elderly patients, and those taking other medications are also at increased risk of hypoglycemia, so caution is necessary. Symptoms of hypoglycemia can vary and may include headache, severe hunger, nausea, fatigue, confusion, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, etc.; if such symptoms occur, sugar should be ingested immediately or medical personnel should be notified. During treatment with this medication, regular meals, exercise, and weight management are important, and if blood sugar control is inadequate, consultation with a doctor to adjust treatment methods is necessary. When taking this medication in conjunction with others, be aware of potential interactions, and inform healthcare personnel of all medications being taken and monitor blood sugar regularly. In cases of pregnancy or lactation, it is safer to switch to insulin treatment rather than using this medication. Children and adolescents under 18 should not take this medication, as its safety and efficacy have not been established in this population. In cases of overdose, severe hypoglycemia may occur, necessitating an immediate visit to a healthcare facility for appropriate treatment.
