Treatment of mood disorders (depression and premenstrual dysphoric disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bulimia nervosa
This medication is used for various conditions including depression, bulimia nervosa, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder. Effects may be observed within 5-6 weeks of treatment for depression, helping to improve the patient's daily functioning and mood. In patients with bulimia nervosa, it effectively reduces binge eating and purging behaviors. Symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder are significantly reduced, positively impacting social and work life. It alleviates symptoms of premenstrual dysphoric disorder, such as depression, anxiety, and physical pain, enhancing the quality of daily life. Regular evaluation by a doctor is necessary during long-term use, but this medication is effectively used for the treatment of each condition.
Adults 1. Depression 1) Initial treatment: The initial dose is 20mg of fluoxetine hydrochloride, administered orally once daily in the morning. In controlled clinical trials, doses of 20~80mg per day were administered. If no improvement is observed, an increase in dose may be considered after several weeks. Doses exceeding 20mg per day should be administered in 2 divided doses (morning and noon), and the maximum dose of 80mg per day should not be exceeded. The onset of an adequate antidepressant effect may be delayed until 4 weeks or longer after starting treatment. 2) Maintenance/continuation/extended treatment: There are no definitive data on how long patients should be treated with this medicine, but psychopharmacologists agree that acute symptoms of depression require several months or longer of drug treatment. It is not known whether the amount of antidepressant needed to relieve symptoms is the same as the amount needed to maintain or sustain stability. 2. Bulimia nervosa Administer 60mg of this medicine per day. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. Measure electrolyte levels before starting treatment. 3. Obsessive-compulsive disorder Administer 20~60mg of this medicine per day. The daily dose should not exceed 80mg. 4. Premenstrual dysphoric disorder Administer 20mg of this medicine per day. After 6 months of treatment, reevaluate whether continued treatment is necessary. Patients with renal and/or hepatic impairment, patients receiving multiple medications, elderly patients, and patients with comorbid conditions: Administer a lower dose or reduce the frequency of administration. Adjust the dose as appropriate according to age and symptoms. Switching from MAO inhibitors used to treat psychiatric disorders When discontinuing an MAO inhibitor used to treat psychiatric disorders and starting treatment with this medicine, an interval of at least 14 days must be allowed. Conversely, when starting an MAO inhibitor to treat psychiatric disorders, at least 5 weeks must have elapsed after discontinuing this medicine. Other MAO inhibitors, such as linezolid or methylene blue Patients receiving linezolid or intravenous methylene blue should not start this medicine because of the increased risk of serotonin syndrome. For patients requiring more urgent treatment of a psychiatric condition, including hospitalization, other interventions should be considered. It may be necessary to urgently administer linezolid or intravenous methylene blue to a patient already receiving this medicine. If no alternative to linezolid or intravenous methylene blue is available and, for a particular patient, the benefits of treatment with linezolid or intravenous methylene blue are judged to outweigh the risk of serotonin syndrome, this medicine may be discontinued immediately and linezolid or intravenous methylene blue administered. The patient should be monitored for symptoms of serotonin syndrome for 5 weeks after administration of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue, or until 24 hours after the last dose, whichever occurs first. Treatment with this medicine may be restarted 24 hours after the last dose of linezolid or intravenous methylene blue. The risk associated with administration of methylene blue by non-intravenous routes (oral tablets or local injection) or with intravenous administration of this medicine at a dose of 1mg/kg or less is unclear. Nevertheless, clinicians should be aware of the possibility of emergency symptoms of serotonin syndrome with these uses.
This medication is an antidepressant used to treat mental health issues such as depression. Before using this medication, careful consultation with a physician is necessary for children, adolescents, and young adults aged 18 to 24, as it can increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behaviors. Patients with allergies to this medication or any additives, severe kidney dysfunction, and those currently taking certain medications (MAO inhibitors) should not take this medication. Patients with a history of seizures should be cautious while using this medication and should discontinue it immediately if seizures occur or frequency increases. Patients at risk of suicide should be closely monitored from the beginning of treatment, and families or caregivers should observe any changes in the patient's behavior. Patients with heart disease or risk factors associated with QT interval prolongation should preferably undergo an electrocardiogram before taking this medication. Dose adjustment may be necessary for patients with impaired liver or kidney function. Diabetic patients may experience changes in blood sugar control and should check their blood sugar frequently and adjust medication doses as needed. This medication can dilate pupils, so patients at risk of glaucoma should use it with caution. Additionally, this medication contains certain dyes, so patients with allergies to these should take it carefully. During treatment, side effects such as headaches, nausea, insomnia, fatigue, and diarrhea may occur, and rarely serious allergic reactions or hepatitis may arise. Suddenly stopping the medication can lead to withdrawal symptoms like dizziness, sensory disturbances, sleep disorders, anxiety, nausea, and tremors, so doses should be gradually reduced according to a doctor's instructions. This medication can interact with other drugs, so if you are taking or planning to take other medications, be sure to consult with a doctor or pharmacist. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should consult healthcare professionals to determine whether to use this medication, as it may affect the fetus or baby. It is not recommended for children or adolescents as safety and efficacy have not been established. Elderly patients should be cautious of the risk of side effects depending on other conditions or medications they are taking. In cases of overdose, serious symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, seizures, and heart arrhythmias may appear, and medical attention should be sought immediately. This medication should be kept out of reach of children and should not be transferred to another container for safety.
