Key information summary
Efficacy & effects
This medication is effectively used for acute diarrhea and chronic diarrhea.
Dosage
Acute diarrhea: The initial dose is 4mg of hydrochloride loperamide administered orally, and 2mg should be given each time loose stools occur. The usual daily dosage is 6-8mg, with a maximum daily dosage of 16mg. Chronic diarrhea: The initial dose is 4mg administered orally, and 2mg should be given each time loose stools occur until diarrhea is resolved. Once the optimal daily dosage is determined, it should be divided into 1 or 2 doses for daily administration, typically.
Precautions
This medication should not be used in infants under 24 months or children suffering from chronic diarrhea. Patients with bacterial diarrhea accompanied by bloody stools or high fever, patients with acute ulcerative colitis, and patients with severe intestinal diseases such as bowel obstruction or megacolon should also not be administered this medication. Additionally, individuals allergic to this medication or those with certain genetic lactose-related disorders should avoid its use. Patients with poor liver function should use this medication with caution and should be closely monitored for liver function or central nervous system side effects during treatment. If diarrhea symptoms do not improve within 48 hours (acute) or 10 days (chronic), medication usage should be stopped and advice from a specialist should be sought. Due to the potential for dehydration and electrolyte imbalance caused by diarrhea, proper hydration is crucial, especially for children. While taking this medication, fatigue, dizziness, and drowsiness may occur, so caution is needed when driving or operating machinery. If abdominal distension or symptoms of bowel obstruction occur, medication usage should be immediately discontinued. Women in early pregnancy should carefully weigh the benefits and risks of using this medication, and breastfeeding women are advised against its use as the components can be transferred into breast milk. Children, particularly those aged over 24 months to under 7 years, should strictly use this medication according to a specialist's instruction, as immature liver function increases the risk of overdose. Elderly individuals may have decreased bodily functions, and therefore dosage adjustments and caution are necessary. In cases of overdose, severe side effects such as central nervous system depression, respiratory depression, drowsiness, and intestinal obstruction may occur, so the prescribed dosage must be adhered to. If an overdose is suspected, immediate hospital visit for detoxification treatment is necessary, and the condition should be closely monitored for at least 48 hours. This medication does not treat the cause of diarrhea but alleviates symptoms, so it is important to consult a specialist if symptoms persist.
