This medicine is effective in treating parasitic infections such as trichomoniasis and amoebiasis. It is also used for various anaerobic bacterial infections, and helps treat peritonitis, liver abscess, skin and soft tissue infections, gynecological infections such as endometritis and myometritis, ovarian abscesses, bone and joint infections, central nervous system infections such as brain abscess and meningitis, lower respiratory infections such as pneumonia, and several severe infections including endocarditis. It is particularly important for preventing anaerobic infections that can occur after surgery. This drug is effective against anaerobic bacterioides and streptococci and improves various infectious conditions such as sepsis, abscesses, and necrotizing pneumonia. It is a reliable medicine used in the treatment and prevention of such diverse infectious diseases.

Dosage and Administration

Precautions

This drug should be avoided due to reports of tumor formation in rodent experiments. Systemic administration of this drug in patients with cocaine syndrome may cause severe hepatotoxicity or acute liver failure; therefore, liver function tests must be conducted and cautious usage is required. It should not be administered to patients who are allergic to this drug or its components, those with a history of blood disorders or neurological disorders, mothers in the first trimester of pregnancy, or those taking certain medications. Also, severe side effects may occur when consumed with alcohol, so alcohol should be avoided for at least 3 days during and after treatment. Extra caution is needed for patients with liver dysfunction or pregnant women in the later stages, CNS infection patients, and those requiring sodium restrictions. Various side effects may occur in the digestive system, blood system, skin, and nervous system; therefore, if abnormal symptoms arise, medical personnel should be notified immediately. Patients with severe liver disease may need dosage adjustment as the drug can accumulate in the body, and regular clinical evaluations during treatment are recommended. This drug may affect blood clotting; therefore, patients taking anticoagulants need blood testing and dosage adjustments. There are many interactions with other medications, so inform your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking other drugs, especially avoiding concomitant use with alcohol, disulfiram, and certain antiepileptics. During pregnancy, this medication may affect the fetus; hence, it should not be used in the early months of pregnancy, and nursing should be discontinued while using this drug. In case of overdose, no specific antidote exists, usual treatment will be administered, and this drug should not be mixed with other drugs but is to be used solely for intravenous drip injection. Any remaining drug after usage should be discarded, and if adverse skin reactions occur during administration, the treatment should be stopped immediately.

Serious side effects

Urticaria, severe swelling (angioedema), anaphylactic shock, mucocutaneous syndrome (Stevens-Johnson syndrome), toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell syndrome), drug reaction with eosinophilia and systemic symptoms (DRESS), acute generalized exanthematous pustulosis (AGEP), hepatitis, jaundice, convulsive seizures, encephalopathy, subacute cerebellar syndrome, severe hepatotoxicity/acute liver failure.
