How to take

Adult dose

Adults and children aged 12 and over or weighing 40 kg or more take amoxicillin/clavulanate potassium at a dosage of 250 mg/125 mg per dose, taken orally three times a day every 8 hours. In cases of severe or respiratory infections, the dose may be increased to 500 mg/125 mg per dose. For those with renal impairment, dosing should be adjusted according to creatinine clearance: - 10 to 30 mL/min: Amoxicillin 250 to 500 mg every 12 hours.

Child dose

Administered the same way as for adults and children aged 12 and over or weighing 40 kg or more, but dosage should be adjusted in cases of renal impairment.

Precautions

This medication is a beta-lactam antibiotic and should not be administered to patients who have shown hypersensitivity to its components or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Care should be taken in patients with viral infections like infectious mononucleosis or lymphocytic leukemia due to the increased risk of rash. Patients with a history of hepatic dysfunction or jaundice may experience a recurrence of symptoms upon taking this drug, and it is advisable to avoid its use. Caution is warranted in patients with liver impairment as liver function may deteriorate, and patients with severe renal impairment should have their dosing adjusted to prevent accumulation in the body. Patients with allergies, the elderly, or those receiving parenteral nutrition may exhibit vitamin K deficiency symptoms and should be closely monitored. This medication may cause gastrointestinal side effects such as diarrhea, vomiting, and abdominal pain, and gastrointestinal symptoms may be alleviated by taking it with food. Liver function abnormalities have also been reported, and the elderly or long-term users should have regular liver function tests. Rarely, severe skin reactions, hypersensitivity reactions, or anaphylactic shock may occur; if unusual symptoms develop during treatment, immediate medical attention should be sought. Hematologic adverse reactions such as leukopenia or anemia may rarely occur, so symptoms warranting caution should be monitored. Central nervous system side effects such as dizziness, headache, and seizures may occur, and patients with renal impairment may be at risk of acute renal failure, necessitating regular checks. Like other antibiotics, this medication may alter intestinal flora and could lead to serious gastrointestinal diseases like pseudomembranous colitis; thus, it should be discontinued immediately in cases of diarrhea or abdominal pain. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should use this medication cautiously as its effects on the fetus or infant have not been fully verified; it should only be used when necessary. It is not recommended for children under 12 years of age or for those weighing less than 40 kg; elderly patients require dose and interval adjustments due to decreased physical function. It is important to inform the physician of the usage of this drug as it may affect certain clinical test results. In cases of overdose, gastrointestinal symptoms may occur alongside renal and neurological changes, requiring immediate medical care.
