Summary

Main use
Improvement of symptoms of chronic arterial occlusive disease (e.g., ulcers and pain); treatment of primary pulmonary hypertension
Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
Improvement of ulcers, pain, and coldness associated with chronic arterial occlusive disease (such as Buerger's disease, obliterative arteriosclerosis, and diabetic peripheral angiopathy): The usual adult dose is 0.12 mg (6 tablets) of beraprost sodium per day, administered orally after meals in 3 divided doses (2 tablets per dose). Primary pulmonary hypertension: 1) The usual adult starting dose is 0.06 mg (3 tablets) of beraprost sodium per day, administered orally after meals in 3 divided doses (1 tablet per dose). The dose is then gradually increased while carefully monitoring symptoms (adverse reactions). If the dose is increased, administer 3-4 times daily, up to a maximum dose of 0.18 mg (9 tablets) per day. 2) Since patients vary in their tolerance to the drug, start this product at a low dose and closely monitor the patient's condition when increasing the dose. 3) Since this product is for oral administration, it may be ineffective in patients with severe symptoms. If hemodynamic parameters and/or clinical symptoms do not improve sufficiently, appropriate treatment should be given, such as switching to an injectable formulation or another therapy.

Precautions

This medication should not be used in patients with bleeding. Special caution is required for patients at high risk of bleeding, such as those with hemophilia or gastrointestinal bleeding. Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not take this medication as it may affect the fetus. This medication contains lactose, so patients with genetic metabolic disorders such as lactose intolerance or galactose intolerance should not take it. Patients taking anticoagulants or antiplatelet agents or those using thrombolytics should be cautious with this medication, as the risk of bleeding may increase. Patients who are menstruating or have a tendency to bleed should also use this medication carefully. Patients with severe renal impairment may have an increased concentration of this medication in the body, which may require dose adjustments. Rarely, serious bleeding such as cerebral hemorrhage, gastrointestinal bleeding, or pulmonary bleeding may occur while taking this medication, so symptoms should be closely monitored. Severe allergic reactions such as shock, syncope, or loss of consciousness may occur, so if any abnormal symptoms appear, discontinue administration immediately and notify medical personnel. There may be serious side effects such as liver dysfunction or interstitial pneumonia, so it is important to periodically check liver health. There have been reports of heart-related issues such as angina or myocardial infarction, so patients with a history of heart disease should be cautious. Side effects such as headache, dizziness, dyspepsia, and skin rashes may occur, so symptoms should be closely observed, and any abnormalities should be discussed with healthcare personnel. During treatment, caution is needed for dangerous activities such as driving or operating machinery, as there is a risk of accidents due to impaired consciousness or dizziness. When combined with other medications, there may be an increased risk of bleeding or decreased blood pressure, so always consult with a doctor or pharmacist. Safety has not been established during pregnancy, so pregnant women should not take this medication, and breastfeeding women should also avoid administration if possible; if unavoidable, they should discontinue breastfeeding. The safety of this medication has not been sufficiently confirmed in children, so it should be used with caution. Older adults may have reduced body function, so doses should be adjusted and administered carefully. This medication should be kept out of reach of children, and transferring to another container should be avoided as it may cause degradation of quality or accidents.
