Treatment of respiratory, ear, nose and throat, and ophthalmic infections; skin, intestinal, and genitourinary infections; combination treatment for leprosy
This drug is used for complicated skin and soft tissue infections caused by various bacteria, acute and chronic otitis media, acute and chronic sinusitis, community-acquired pneumonia, and acute exacerbations of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease including chronic bronchitis. It is also effective for urinary tract infections such as acute pyelonephritis, simple acute cystitis, bacterial prostatitis, urethritis, and gonococcal urethritis. It can be used to treat gastrointestinal infections, inflammation of the uterus and adnexa, periorbital infections, and corneal ulcers, and is included in the combination therapy for leprosy. However, due to the characteristics of fluoroquinolone antibiotics, there is a risk of serious adverse reactions; therefore, it should be used only in the absence of other treatment options. This drug helps restore the health of patients when used for the treatment of various infectious diseases.
○ Adults: Administer ofloxacin 300~600 mg per day orally in 2~3 divided doses. ○ For leprosy, administer this drug 400~600 mg per day orally in 2~3 divided doses. In principle, use in combination with other antileprosy drugs. Adjust the dose appropriately according to age and symptoms.
This drug is a fluoroquinolone antibiotic and can cause serious side effects such as tendon-related disorders like tendinitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system abnormalities. It should not be used in patients with myasthenia gravis as symptoms may worsen. This drug should only be used when there are no alternative treatments for specific bacterial infections such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, simple urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media. Elderly patients, those with renal impairment, and those using corticosteroids may have an increased risk of tendon rupture, and concomitant use should be avoided. If tendon pain or inflammation occurs, treatment should be stopped immediately. Furthermore, this drug can cause neuromuscular blocking effects and severe adverse effects may occur in patients with myasthenia gravis, so great caution is required. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug or history of tendinitis or tendon rupture due to this drug or similar agents, adolescents under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding women, those with specific genetic diseases, and patients with a history of seizure disorders such as epilepsy should not use this medication. Patients with severe renal impairment, elderly patients, individuals with psychiatric disorders, liver disease, and those with a history of aortic aneurysm or valvular heart disease must use this medication with special care. Various adverse reactions can occur, including anaphylactic shock, hypersensitivity reactions, renal and hepatic dysfunction, gastrointestinal issues, blood abnormalities, neuropsychiatric disturbances, skin reactions, musculoskeletal disorders, respiratory problems, and cardiovascular issues. If any abnormal symptoms occur, treatment should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought. During use, sensitivity testing should be conducted to prevent the occurrence of resistant bacteria, and the medication should be taken only for the minimum required period. To prevent photoreactions, strong sunlight or artificial UV exposure should be avoided. Additionally, patients with a history of central nervous system disorders should be cautious due to the risk of seizures, and regular liver, kidney, and blood tests are required during long-term use. Adequate hydration is necessary during treatment, and neurological symptoms such as dizziness may occur, necessitating caution when driving or operating machinery. Diabetic patients needing glucose control must monitor for blood sugar fluctuations. This drug may interact with various medications, so consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary if taken with anticoagulants, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, certain antacids, iron supplements, or antihypertensives. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this drug, especially stopping treatment while breastfeeding. The safety has not been established for children and adolescents, so it is not used in this population. Elderly patients may require careful adjustment of dosage and intervals due to potential increases in drug concentration from renal function decline, and there may be an increased risk of aortic aneurysm or dissection. In case of overdose, symptoms such as drowsiness, nausea, and dizziness may appear, requiring careful observation and sufficient hydration. For intravenous administration, it should be given slowly, and it should not be administered with certain solutions. Finally, this drug should be kept out of reach of children, and it is safe not to transfer it to other containers.
