Who takes it
Adults
Adult dose
1. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis, urethritis, etc.) Adults: Administer 100 mg of balofloxacin per dose orally twice daily. Patients with renal impairment (severe renal impairment with creatinine clearance of 40 mL/min or less): Administer 100 mg of this drug per dose every 2 days. 2. Pelvic infections, cervicitis Adults: Administer 200 mg of this drug per dose twice daily for 7 days (for pelvic infections, treatment may be continued for up to 14 days depending on the degree of symptom improvement). Patients with renal impairment (severe renal impairment with creatinine clearance of 40 mL/min or less): Administer 200 mg of this drug per dose every 2 days. ※When only the serum creatinine concentration is known, creatinine clearance can be calculated using the following formula. ○ Men: Creatinine clearance (mL/min) = body weight (kg) × (140-age) / 72 × plasma creatinine concentration (mg/mL) ○ Women: 0.85 × the value calculated for men

This medication is effective against various bacteria, particularly for treating infections caused by various strains of Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, Escherichia coli, etc. Its main indications include uncomplicated urinary tract infections, pelvic inflammatory diseases, and cervicitis. However, as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic, it carries a risk of serious adverse reactions; therefore, it should only be used when other treatment options are unavailable for uncomplicated urinary tract infections. Thus, this medication should be used with caution for the treatment of diseases associated with specific bacterial infections, which aids in improving the infection.

How to take

Adult dose

1. Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (cystitis, urethritis, etc.) Adults: Administer 100 mg of balofloxacin per dose orally twice daily. Patients with renal impairment (severe renal impairment with creatinine clearance of 40 mL/min or less): Administer 100 mg of this drug per dose every 2 days. 2. Precautions

This medication is used as a fluoroquinolone antibiotic for certain bacterial infections. However, it may cause tendon-related side effects such as tendonitis or tendon rupture, thus use should be discontinued immediately if pain or inflammation in the tendons occurs. Additionally, serious side effects such as peripheral neuropathy, central nervous system abnormalities, and exacerbation of myasthenia gravis may arise, necessitating immediate consultation with a physician if these symptoms occur. It is advisable for patients with myasthenia gravis to avoid using this medication. This medication should not be used in pregnant women, breastfeeding women, or children under 18 years of age. Patients with severely impaired renal function may have increased drug concentration, necessitating frequent renal function tests and discontinuation if any abnormal signs appear. Patients with a history of seizures or convulsions may also experience an increased risk of seizures when using this medication. Elderly patients may require dose adjustments and caution due to decreased renal function, which may lead to elevated drug concentrations. Caution should also be exercised when administering this medication to patients with cardiovascular diseases, such as valve regurgitation or aneurysms; any related symptoms should prompt immediate medical attention. If allergic reactions such as hives, rash, itching, or facial swelling occur during treatment with this medication, usage should cease immediately. Gastrointestinal symptoms may include nausea, diarrhea, or abdominal pain, and if severe symptoms arise, the physician should be notified. Neuropsychiatric side effects may include dizziness, headaches, insomnia, hallucinations, or depression; if any unusual symptoms occur, consultation with a physician is advised. This medication may interact with other drugs, particularly antacids, certain non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, theophylline, and antihyperglycemic agents, so caution is necessary when taken together. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication due to lack of established safety. Store the medication in a tightly closed container away from children and avoid transferring it to other containers. The medication should only be used for the minimum necessary duration to achieve therapeutic effects; if side effects occur, it is crucial to stop immediately and consult with healthcare professionals.
