Treatment of various bacterial infections such as respiratory infections and urinary tract infections
This medication is used for several infections caused by various bacteria. It is effective against respiratory infections and community-acquired pneumonia, excluding acute bronchitis, and is also utilized for ear, nose, and throat infections (such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, laryngitis). Additionally, it is used for the treatment of bacterial prostatitis, acute complicated urinary tract infections, gonococcal cervicitis and urethritis, gastrointestinal infections, and cholangitis. It is effective against a variety of infections in skin and soft tissue, bone and joint infections, gynecological infections, and peritonitis. However, as a fluoroquinolone drug, there is a potential risk of serious adverse reactions, so it should be used restrictively when there are no alternative treatment options for acute bacterial rhinosinusitis, acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, uncomplicated urinary tract infections, and acute otitis media. Overall, this drug is used safely and effectively for the treatment of various infections.
The usual adult dosage of ciprofloxacin is 250 to 500 mg orally, twice daily on an empty stomach. For severe complicated infections, the dose may be increased to 750 mg twice daily. For acute infections, treatment typically lasts for 5 to 10 days, and even after symptoms resolve, it should be continued for at least 3 more days. In patients with renal impairment, dosage adjustments based on creatinine clearance are necessary.
This medication may cause serious side effects such as tendonitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system effects. It should be avoided in patients with myasthenia gravis as symptoms may worsen. This drug is only used for specific bacterial infections and is administered only when no other treatment options are available. Caution is needed for the elderly, patients with impaired kidney function, and those taking corticosteroids as they are at higher risk for tendon damage. If pain or inflammation in the tendon occurs, stop taking this medication immediately and rest. This medication may increase the risk of seizures, so caution is advised for patients with epilepsy or central nervous system disorders. It should not be used in pregnant women, those who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, and children and adolescents under 18 years old. Due to many drug interactions, especially with theophylline, tizanidine, and ketoprofen, caution is required as side effects may be exacerbated when taken together. Photosensitivity reactions may occur during use, so avoid strong sunlight or ultraviolet exposure. Blood sugar fluctuations may occur, so diabetic patients should monitor their blood sugar levels frequently and seek treatment immediately in case of hypoglycemic symptoms. Consult a doctor or pharmacist immediately if any abnormal symptoms or side effects occur during use. Store in a place out of reach of children, and keep away from direct sunlight or ultraviolet rays.
