This drug is used for the treatment of infections caused by a variety of bacteria. Major types of infections include respiratory infections (except acute bronchitis) and pneumonia occurring in the community. It is also effective for infections of the ears, nose, throat, bacterial prostatitis, urinary tract infections, gonococcal cervicitis and urethritis, gastrointestinal tract and biliary tract infections. It is used to treat various tissue infections including skin, soft tissue, bone and joint infections, and gynecological infections, as well as peritonitis. However, because this medication belongs to the fluoroquinolone class and has a risk of severe adverse reactions, it is recommended for use only when there are no alternative treatment options for certain conditions such as acute bacterial sinusitis, acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis, and acute exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. This medication helps effectively treat various types of bacterial infections.
For typical adult use of ciprofloxacin, 1 dose of 250 to 500 mg is administered orally twice a day between meals. In cases of severe mixed infections, the dose can be increased to 750 mg twice a day. For acute infections, treatment usually lasts 5 to 10 days and should continue for at least 3 more days even after symptoms disappear. For patients with renal impairment, dosage should be adjusted based on creatinine clearance, and in severe infections, severe renal impairment
This medication may cause serious side effects such as tendonitis or tendon rupture, peripheral neuropathy, and central nervous system adverse reactions. If these symptoms occur, stop taking the medication immediately and consult a physician. In particular, patients with myasthenia gravis should not take this medication as it may worsen their symptoms. Also, this medication is used to treat acute bacterial infections, but it is recommended to use it only when there are no alternative treatment options. Taking this medication with corticosteroids increases the risk of tendon rupture, so they should not be taken together. This medication has neuromuscular blocking effects and may be dangerous for patients with myasthenia gravis. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity, pregnant or lactating women, adolescents under 18 years of age, and patients with epilepsy should not take this medication. Patients with a history of seizures or severely impaired kidney function, elderly patients, etc., should use this medication with caution. This medication can cause various adverse reactions, and symptoms can include skin rash, gastrointestinal disturbances, liver dysfunction, and neurological symptoms. Especially if psychiatric symptoms such as seizures, confusion, depression, or suicidal thoughts occur, it should be discontinued immediately. This medication can increase sensitivity to sunlight, leading to skin reactions, so avoid strong sunlight exposure. It may affect blood sugar control, so diabetic patients should monitor their blood sugar closely. There are many drug interactions, so caution is required when taken with specific medications, and consultation with a doctor or pharmacist is advised. It is safe not to use this medication while pregnant or breastfeeding. This medication will not be administered to children and growing adolescents. Elderly patients should pay attention to dosage adjustments and intervals due to potential increases in drug concentrations due to decreased kidney function. In case of overdose, there is a risk of kidney damage, and immediate treatment at a medical institution is required. This medication should be stored away from direct sunlight and ultraviolet light, and kept out of reach of children.
