Researchers from the University of Aberdeen and the University of Birmingham in the UK conducted a study on 16 obese individuals. They first exercised on a treadmill for 45 minutes at 20 degrees Celsius, and then for 45 minutes at 8 degrees Celsius. After each exercise session, they were taken to a buffet where they were given food, and their food intake was measured.
As a result, the group that exercised in the cold consumed more carbohydrates than the group that exercised in the warm. Analysis of blood concentrations of ghrelin, a hormone that stimulates appetite, revealed that those who exercised in the cold had ghrelin concentrations up to 0.24 pg/mL higher than those who exercised in the warm.
This is analyzed as being because metabolism does not proceed smoothly when exercising in a cold place.
When exercising in a hot environment, the supply of nutrients to organs and cells is slower or less efficient, leading to more hunger. If your goal is to lose weight, exercising indoors during the cold winter months is more beneficial than exercising outdoors.
