[Exercise on the weekend] Will running for 10 minutes a day improve your health?

Reporter Shin Su-jeong's story

It is a well-known fact that we need to exercise to stay healthy.

The reason I don't do it, though, is because the thought of hours of strenuous, arduous exercise can be discouraging before I even start. However, exercise for health doesn't have to be difficult or time-consuming.

According to a 2014 study conducted by Iowa State University on 55,138 adults with an average age of 44, titled 'Leisure-time running reduces the risk of death from all causes and cardiovascular disease,' those who ran during their leisure time had a 45% lower risk of cardiovascular-related mortality than those who did not.

In particular, the key findings of this study were that running less than 51 minutes per week, or 5 to 10 minutes per day, did not show a significant difference in positive effects compared to running 80 minutes, 119 minutes, or 185 minutes per week.

In other words, simply running at a speed of 9 km/h for 10 minutes a day is a healthy way to exercise. There's no need to run longer or faster.

However, this result was observed only in people who ran consistently and regularly during the study period, excluding those who stopped running, so it is important to keep running.

There are many other benefits to running. Dr. Ko Je-ik, a comparative medicine physician and author, once appeared on the YouTube channel "Knowledge Inside," explaining, "Running for just 10 minutes a day consistently strengthens the heart and blood vessels, develops muscles, and increases male hormones. It also strengthens the autonomic nervous system."

So, let's abandon the idea that running for an hour or two to stay healthy, dragging our bodies to the gym after a long day of exhaustion, and lifting iron bars. Let's take the first step toward a long and healthy life by developing the habit of running for just 10 minutes a day.

=============

10 minutes of running a day

Is this the first step to a long and healthy life?

Even if you don't run for a long time

Is it good for your health?

I was really curious
