"When you can't sleep, do this with your eyes!"... If you do this more than twice, you'll fall asleep?
If you're struggling with sleep, try rolling your eyes tonight. A new solution is gaining traction for those suffering from insomnia.
According to the British daily Daily Mail, social media wellness expert Dr. Heather Gordon introduced the "eye rolling" technique on her TikTok. With over 2.6 million views, the video is gaining recognition as an effective way to combat insomnia.
Gordon, who goes by the name "Pretty Sick Heather" on TikTok, shares various health and wellness tips. She revealed her own sleep secret: "When I can't sleep at night, I roll my eyes and it works every time."
Gordon's method is simple: Close your eyes. Look down, then back to the center. Look all the way to the left, then back to the center. Look all the way to the right, then back to the center. Look up, then roll your eyes clockwise. Roll your eyes counterclockwise. Finally, cross your eyes as if looking at the center of your nose, creating a "squint." Gordon emphasized that "if you repeat this process, you'll naturally fall asleep," and that he's never repeated this method more than twice.
Gordon's method has been met with rave reviews. In the comments on the video, one viewer expressed gratitude, saying, "I started feeling drowsy and fell asleep after repeating it three times." Another said, "I fell asleep while doing this, and when I woke up three hours later, the video was still playing." One woman in particular said the method helped her "sleep longer than usual."
Rolling your eyes stimulates melatonin secretion.
In fact, scientific evidence has been presented. In a post on the blog platform Medium, Danish cardiologist Dr. Willem Gillen stated, "The eye rolling movement may help stimulate melatonin secretion."
He explained, "The act of rolling your eyes upward plays a crucial role in regulating the body's sleep-wake cycle." Research shows that rapid eye movement during REM sleep stimulates melatonin secretion, providing significant evidence linking eye movement with sleep hormones.
Insomnia is a common problem for many people. In Korea, the number of patients receiving treatment for insomnia increased to 782,381, a 1.7-fold increase from 448,022 in 2013. In the UK, one in three adults and nearly half of all adults in the US report experiencing insomnia. Millions of people suffer from sleepless nights, and prolonged sleep deprivation can lead to serious health problems such as obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Improving sleep hygiene is also essential to addressing insomnia. This includes maintaining a regular sleep schedule, increasing physical activity during the day, and creating a quiet and comfortable sleeping environment.
