I want to have white teeth.

I am very jealous of people whose teeth are white regardless of being male or female because they look so beautiful when they smile. I heard there are self-whitening toothpastes available at home, but I am scared to try them. If I do self-whitening alone, will my teeth get damaged or have side effects? To make yellow teeth white, do I have to go to the dentist for teeth whitening?
