Do teeth whitening treatments usually need to be continued periodically?

I feel like my teeth have darkened a bit recently, so I am considering getting teeth whitening at the dentist. However, I am wondering if the effects last a lifetime after a single treatment, or if it is a procedure that requires periodic repeats. If I do need to do it periodically, I would like to know how often I should visit to avoid putting strain on my dental health.
