Questions related to vaginitis

I went to the gynecology department with my girlfriend and had surgery because she said she had a severe vaginitis. Actually, I don't even know what vaginitis is or how to manage it. We don't have sex often, but I wonder if it's related to that or if it's because I don't wash that area well during regular showers. I am seeking advice.
