Avocado is a particularly good fruit for vegetarians seeking to consume plant-based protein. Additionally, avocados are widely used as a diet food. They are rich in various nutrients, including protein, fiber, unsaturated fats, magnesium, and vitamin K.
The appropriate intake of avocado varies from person to person, but generally, the recommended single serving is one-third of an avocado. Avocados, which originate from Mexico, are also produced domestically in regions such as Jeollanam-do, Gyeongnam, and Jeju, but since the quantities are not large, most are imported from abroad.
There is a study titled "Avocado Consumption, Abdominal Adiposity, and Oral Glucose Tolerance Among Persons with Overweight and Obesity" that suggests that consuming avocados daily is effective in reducing abdominal fat in women due to the health benefits of avocados.
A collaborative research team led by scientists from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in the United States conducted a 12-week randomized controlled trial providing one meal a day to 105 overweight or obese adults.
The research team divided the participants into two groups: one group was provided with a diet including fresh avocados during meals, while the other group was given a diet with similar ingredients and calories but without avocados. Over a 12-week study period, metabolic indicators such as abdominal fat and glucose tolerance were measured at the beginning and end of the study.

As a result, women who consumed one avocado daily during meals experienced a reduction in abdominal fat and a decrease in the ratio of visceral fat to subcutaneous fat. However, these changes were not observed in men, and neither gender showed improvement in insulin sensitivity.
There are two types of fat in the abdomen: subcutaneous fat, which accumulates just beneath the skin, and visceral fat, which is stored deeper in the abdomen and surrounds the organs. People with a high ratio of visceral fat are known to have a higher risk of developing diabetes, but targeting and reducing only visceral fat is not easy.
