"What should I eat when I have heartburn?"... Good foods vs. foods to avoid

Heartburn is a common chest pain that occurs after eating, usually caused by acid reflux. If you frequently experience heartburn after eating, it may be a sign of chronic gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Managing this chronic condition is crucial, and diet can help alleviate GERD symptoms. Based on data from Health, a US health media outlet, we introduce foods that can help relieve heartburn, as well as foods to avoid.

4 Foods That Relieve Heartburn

honey

Honey has several benefits for managing acid reflux. First, it forms a coating-like film on the stomach and esophagus, preventing food and stomach acid from backing up into the esophagus.

Chicken and seafood

Eating lean meats like chicken, turkey, and fish is also recommended. Limit the use of oil and butter, and cook them using methods like grilling, baking, and steaming.

vegetable

Vegetables are rich in fiber, low in fat, and alkaline. If you find salads too much, you can add more vegetables, chop them up and add them to dishes, or juice them with fruit. Recommended vegetables include broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, spinach, carrots, corn, cucumber, ginger, green beans, green peppers, potatoes, and sweet potatoes.

whole grains

Whole grain foods are rich in fiber, which helps aid digestion and reduce heartburn symptoms. In general, eating fiber-rich foods improves digestion and reduces heartburn symptoms. Recommended options include brown rice, couscous, oatmeal, and whole-grain bread.

4 Foods That Worsen Heartburn

acidic foods

If you suffer from frequent heartburn, avoid tomatoes and citrus fruits like oranges, lemons, pineapple, and grapefruit. These fruits are highly acidic and can trigger heartburn symptoms.

Carbonated beverages, alcohol, caffeine

Surprisingly, even the wrong beverage can worsen gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Carbonated beverages can also aggravate GERD by rapidly lowering the pH of the esophagus and temporarily reducing the pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter. Caution is also advised with coffee consumed after a meal, as it can interfere with the activity of the lower esophageal sphincter and promote acid reflux. Alcohol consumption should also be avoided, as it lowers the pressure in the lower esophageal sphincter and increases stomach acid secretion.

high-fat foods

Foods high in fat can worsen heartburn symptoms, likely because fat takes longer to digest. Examples of high-fat foods include chocolate and other sweets, dairy products like cheese, butter, and ice cream, and fatty red meats like filet mignon and bacon.

Mint Although not familiar to Koreans, it's best to avoid products with spearmint or peppermint flavors. Mint can interfere with the proper functioning of the esophageal muscles, causing heartburn.
