Wasn't it good for you? Why seafood increases cancer risk.

Wasn't it good for you? Why seafood increases cancer risk.

A study found that excessive seafood consumption increases the risk of exposure to PFAS (perfluorinated compounds), which increase the risk of cancer.

Perfluorinated compounds (PFAS) are chemicals used in cookware, cosmetics, paper cups, food packaging, waterproof clothing, and stain-resistant carpets. Because PFAS do not readily break down, they persist in the air and water, contaminating food and beverages. Exposure to PFAS is known to affect the immune system through the bloodstream, increasing the risk of various diseases, including cancer.

A research team from Dartmouth-Geisel School of Medicine in the United States analyzed the seafood consumption habits of 1,829 people living in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Portsmouth residents consumed a high proportion of seafood, averaging about 28.35 grams per day. The team examined PFAS levels in 26 seafood products found in the participants' areas of residence.

Analysis results, The highest concentrations of PFAS were detected in shrimp and lobster, with shrimp at 1.74 ng/g and lobster at 3.3 ng/g, respectively.

The research team stated that further research is needed to establish expert advice on seafood consumption. It is necessary to determine how accumulation varies depending on interactions between aquatic animals and PFAS. These interactions include: aquatic animals' diet; aquatic animals' distribution area; and PFAS sediment concentrations.

Dr. Megan Romano, who led the study, said, "Seafood is an excellent source of lean protein and omega fatty acids, but it can contain harmful substances like PFAS and mercury, so consumption should be moderated." Vulnerable populations, such as pregnant women, the elderly, and children, should be especially cautious.

The research team explained that to minimize exposure to PFAS, it is advisable to consume a diverse and balanced diet rather than relying on just one type of seafood.

It's a subway these days...

You shouldn't consume too much

PFAS, a completely unfamiliar substance, has been detected.

These things are also due to ecological pollution.
