Green tea is said to have many health benefits... How many cups a day is appropriate?
Green tea boasts a variety of health benefits, enough so that it was named one of Time magazine's "Top 10 Superfoods." Let's explore the benefits of green tea and how to consume it healthily.
◇Weight loss
Green tea is effective in breaking down body fat and aiding in weight loss. Epigallocatechin gallate, a plant compound found in green tea, boosts metabolism, increases calorie consumption, and breaks down fat cells to burn fat more quickly. According to a study by the Cleveland Clinic, green tea helps regulate appetite and blood sugar levels, contributing to long-term weight management.
◇Improved blood sugar levels
Green tea helps manage postprandial blood sugar levels. Research at Jeju Halla University found that green tea inhibited alpha-glucosidase, a sugar-decomposing enzyme that increases postprandial blood sugar levels. The research team analyzed that the catechins, which give green tea its astringent flavor, were responsible for its blood sugar-improving effect.
◇Cholesterol reduction
Green tea lowers LDL cholesterol, which increases the risk of cardiovascular disease. A study from Sun Yat-sen University in China found that the polyphenols in green tea inhibit an enzyme used in cholesterol synthesis, helping to regulate blood cholesterol levels. A study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition also found that green tea reduced total cholesterol by 7.2 mg/dL and LDL cholesterol by 2.2 mg/dL compared to a placebo. The catechins in green tea help reduce cholesterol absorption in the intestines.
◇Anti-aging
Green tea is rich in antioxidants, making it excellent for anti-aging. Epigallocatechin gallate slows collagen breakdown, improving skin elasticity and eliminating free radicals, a major cause of aging. Vitamin C moisturizes and brightens the skin, creating a youthful complexion.
◇Two or three cups a day is appropriate
Green tea has excellent health benefits, but it's best to limit yourself to two or three cups a day. A single cup of green tea contains 30-50 mg of caffeine, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety recommends a maximum daily caffeine intake of 400 mg for adults. Consuming more than the recommended amount is not recommended.
Epigallocatechin gallate, a compound found in green tea, increases the risk of liver damage if consumed in excess of the recommended amount. Kelly Metzger, a registered dietitian at George Washington University School of Medicine, said, "A cup of green tea contains 50-100 mg of epigallocatechin gallate, and it's recommended not to consume more than 338 mg per day."
