(Cancer Prevention) Just Adding a Spoonful of This to Your Rice... Increases Its Effectiveness
Adding just one spoonful of this to your rice can significantly improve cancer prevention.
Rice is the staple food for Koreans. There's even a saying, "We live by the power of rice," which demonstrates its importance. When cooking rice, some foods, when added to it, can help prevent cancer. Here are four representative examples.
◇Green tea
You can get a boost of antioxidant nutrients by replacing plain water with green tea water when cooking rice. According to a paper titled "The Effect of Adding Green Tea Powder on the Antioxidant Activity and Physical Properties of Rice" published in the Journal of the Korean Society of Food Science and Nutrition, adding green tea water (3g of green tea powder dissolved in water used for cooking rice) when cooking rice significantly increased antioxidant components such as polyphenols and flavonoids. Polyphenols have excellent anticancer effects by reducing free radicals in the body and preventing damage to DNA and proteins caused by free radicals.
◇Beat
Beets, when added to rice, also have anti-cancer properties. According to a study in the Korean Journal of Food Preservation, polyphenols extracted from beets are effective in eliminating free radicals and suppressing cancer-causing inflammation. Furthermore, beets boost energy and enhance motor skills. The betaine in beets improves muscle strength and endurance. Simply peel and chop beets and cook them alongside rice.
◇Oats
Oats are rich in protein, unsaturated fatty acids, and minerals, earning them the moniker "king of grains." 13-20% of oats are dietary fiber, of which 4-5% is beta-glucan, a soluble dietary fiber. Beta-glucan lowers LDL cholesterol, which is a risk factor for cardiovascular disease, and activates cellular immune function. In fact, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), consuming more than 3 grams of beta-glucan per day reduces the risk of heart disease. Furthermore, avenanthramides, a component unique to oats among grains, are known to have excellent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and are also effective in preventing dementia.
◇Burdock
Burdock is rich in minerals like zinc, potassium, and copper. Zinc, among them, supports antioxidant properties and helps prevent aging. Lignin, the sticky component of burdock, is also rich in dietary fiber. Lignin is known to help prevent cancer. When adding burdock, which is rich in dietary fiber, to rice, it's best to slice it as thinly as possible.
