Vitamins and supplements can help fill nutritional gaps in your diet. However, consuming too much of them indiscriminately isn't always beneficial. In particular, taking them together can lead to adverse effects. The Times of India, an Indian English-language newspaper, listed vitamins and supplements that should not be taken together.

 

Fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins

 

Fat-soluble vitamins, such as vitamin D, dissolve in fat and are best absorbed when taken with food. Water-soluble vitamins, such as vitamins C and B12, dissolve in water and are generally more effectively absorbed on an empty stomach. Therefore, taking fat-soluble and water-soluble vitamins together can interfere with their absorption, reducing their effectiveness.

 

Calcium and iron

 

Taking calcium and iron together can reduce their effectiveness, as calcium interferes with iron absorption. To maximize the effectiveness of both supplements, it's best to take them at least two hours apart. A simple rule of thumb is to take one in the morning and one in the evening for optimal absorption.

zinc and copper

 

Zinc and copper compete for absorption in the body. Therefore, taking them together can reduce their effectiveness. To avoid this, choose a supplement that provides a balanced ratio of zinc and copper, or take them at least two hours apart.

 

Magnesium and calcium

 

Magnesium and calcium are both essential for bone health and muscle function, but taking them together can interfere with each other's absorption. To avoid this interference, stagger your magnesium and calcium supplements at different times of the day.

 

Vitamin C and Vitamin B12

 

Excessive intake of vitamin C can interfere with the absorption and metabolism of vitamin B12. To optimize utilization of this nutrient, it is recommended to take it separately or at least two hours apart.
