Sleep, in fact, has a profound impact on our health. Getting enough sleep maintains healthy physical and mental health. Sleep also improves brain function, regulates metabolism, and strengthens the immune system.
In this regard, research has shown that getting enough sleep can also benefit gum health. A research team from Osaka University Dental School in Japan surveyed 219 production workers about their lifestyle habits, including smoking, sleep duration, alcohol consumption, stress, nutritional status, breakfast consumption, and working hours.
Of the 219 subjects, approximately 41% had ongoing gum (periodontal) disease, and all were smokers. The study found that the leading cause of gum disease was, as is well known, smoking, followed by sleep deprivation.
In particular, those who slept for more than 7 to 8 hours showed a significantly lower rate of gum disease progression than those who slept less than 6 hours. The research team explained, "Excessive stress and alcohol consumption were also observed to accelerate the progression of gum disease," and "sleep deprivation appears to weaken the body's immune system, triggering gum disease and accelerating its progression."
An official from the American Academy of Periodontology commented, “These are research results that show that maintaining dental health is possible just by practicing small lifestyle habits such as brushing and flossing your teeth and getting enough sleep.”

With sufficient quality sleep.
Your gums are strong too....
On days when I don't sleep well, my gums definitely swell.
It seems like I'm getting more mouth ulcers too.
