Sleep, or rest, has a significant impact on our health. Getting enough sleep helps maintain strong physical and mental health. Sleep also enhances brain function and has effects such as regulating metabolism and strengthening the immune system.
There is a research finding that getting enough sleep related to this also helps with gum health. A research team from Osaka University School of Dentistry in Japan surveyed 219 production workers about their lifestyle habits, including smoking, sleep duration, alcohol consumption, stress, nutritional status, whether they eat breakfast, and working hours.
Among the 219 study participants, approximately 41% had ongoing periodontal (gum) disease, and all were smokers. The study results showed that the primary cause of gum disease was smoking, as is well known, followed by sleep deprivation.
In particular, people who get more than 7 to 8 hours of restful sleep show a significantly lower progression rate of gum disease compared to those who sleep 6 hours or less. The research team explained, "Excessive stress and alcohol consumption were also observed to promote the progression of gum disease," and added, "Lack of sleep appears to weaken the body's immune system, leading to the development and rapid progression of gum disease."
A representative from the American Dental Association stated, "This study demonstrates that maintaining good oral health can be achieved through simple daily habits such as using a toothbrush and dental floss to keep teeth clean and getting enough sleep."

With quality sufficient sleep.
Your gums are also healthy...
On nights when I have trouble sleeping, my gums also swell.
It seems like canker sores also tend to occur more frequently.
