There are quite a few people who have a love-hate relationship with coffee. While they love and enjoy it immensely, they also experience insomnia or anxiety due to caffeine. Is there a way to more easily determine whether their caffeine intake is appropriate?

According to the American health and medical media outlet "Healthline," research has shown that consuming 400 mg of caffeine per day can cause various side effects, including increased heart rate, anxiety, nausea, headaches, and insomnia. 400 mg of caffeine is equivalent to four small cups of coffee. However, the effects of caffeine on the mind and body vary greatly from person to person. This is why it's important to carefully consider your own needs and appropriately moderate your coffee intake.

It's never easy to accurately determine whether you're drinking the right amount of coffee each day, as you drink it both inside and outside the home. A cup of Americano sold at a coffee shop typically contains 150 mg of caffeine. Mixed coffee typically contains around 60 mg.

Caffeine content varies widely depending on the store, cup size, and brewer. A tall Americano at Starbucks contains 150mg of caffeine, a grante contains 225mg, and a venti contains 300mg. A short hot Americano contains 75mg. If you enjoy an "Ah-Ah" (iced Americano) at Starbucks, you'll meet the FDA recommended intake by drinking no more than about 2.67 cups per day.

There are some things to be especially careful about when enjoying caffeinated beverages like coffee. Some caffeinated beverages can contain more than twice the amount of caffeine found in a single cup of coffee. It's important to always check the nutrition facts labels on food and beverages to calculate your total caffeine intake. It's also important to keep in mind that supplements (health functional foods) aren't regulated for caffeine content, so you could easily end up consuming too much caffeine.

Indiscriminate consumption of caffeine-containing foods and beverages (green tea, black tea, carbonated drinks, chocolate milk, etc.) and supplements, other than coffee, can lead to unknowing adverse effects. The FDA warns that consuming 1200 mg of pure caffeine all at once or in a short period of time can cause various toxic effects, including neurotoxicity and nausea. In fact, one teaspoon of pure powdered caffeine contains the equivalent amount of caffeine as 28 cups of coffee.

If you're having trouble sleeping well despite only drinking two cups of coffee a day, consider reducing to one cup per day. It could be that your body doesn't tolerate caffeine well, or the total amount of caffeine you're consuming from other foods and drinks is too much. Remember that even decaffeinated coffee can contain some caffeine. It's also important to drink plenty of water along with the caffeine.
