A cup of coffee has become a daily ritual that signals the start of the day. Drinking one to two cups of coffee a day not only improves concentration but can also reduce the risk of heart disease and heart failure. Adding one more ingredient to coffee has been shown to have even greater benefits for heart health. Yes. It's cocoa.

The American health information magazine 'Well and Good' introduced the benefits of coffee containing cocoa through an interview with Dr. Niki Bart, a cardiologist specializing in heart failure and heart transplantation, and nutritionist Colette Miko.

First of all, coffee drinkers live longer than non-coffee drinkers. A study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that up to three cups of coffee per day can reduce the risk of death from heart disease and stroke.

 

However, Dr. Bart cautions that this doesn't mean you should drink coffee all day long. "Recent research suggests that one to three cups is optimal," he says, "and anything more than that can be harmful."

Coffee drinkers may also have a lower risk of heart disease and stroke.

A study found that people who drank moderate amounts of coffee (three to five cups per day) had a 15% lower risk of heart disease compared to those who didn't drink coffee at all. "Consumption of six or more cups of coffee did not have any positive or negative cardiovascular health benefits," Miko said.

 

While coffee itself has heart-health benefits, adding cocoa can enhance these benefits. And some of the benefits of coffee and cocoa are similar. Dr. Bart explains: Like coffee beans, cocoa powder contains flavanols, which have anti-inflammatory properties, relax blood vessels, and improve blood sugar control. "Flavanols have been shown to reduce inflammation and improve blood flow," said Miko. "This can have a positive impact on heart health by relaxing blood vessels and lowering blood pressure."

 

You don't need to use too much cocoa to reap the benefits of adding it to your coffee. Unsweetened cocoa powder is bitter, so a little goes a long way. For maximum heart health benefits, Miko recommends adding up to two tablespoons of cocoa powder or raw cacao powder to your coffee daily.
