Lemon water also has the effect of reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases such as hypertension and stroke. This is because lemons contain pectin, which strengthens blood vessels. Citric acid, a type of organic acid that gives a sour taste, helps eliminate waste products accumulated in the body and stimulates appetite. According to research published in the International Journal of Preventive Medicine, subjects with hyperlipidemia who drank lemon water containing garlic for 8 weeks showed improved levels.

Lemon water is also good for reducing the risk of kidney stones. Citrus fruits like lemons contain a high amount of citric acid, which alkalizes the body. The citrate component of citric acid makes the urine less acidic and can break down small stones. One research team conducted a study where they had individuals at high risk of kidney stones either drink lemon water or not. As a result, the group that drank lemon water showed a lower incidence of kidney stone formation.

However, lemons have a strong acidity with a pH of 2 to 3. Drinking it on an empty stomach can erode the stomach lining and cause heartburn. It is also not suitable for patients with reflux esophagitis. The citric acid contained in lemons also poses a significant risk of eroding tooth enamel. To prevent this, it is recommended to rinse your mouth after drinking the beverage. There is also a method of drinking lemon water through a straw.
