Blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events.
This medication is used to improve blood glucose control in adults with type 2 diabetes by administering empagliflozin and metformin in combination. It primarily serves as an adjunct to dietary and exercise regimens to assist in blood glucose management. Moreover, caution is warranted in patients with type 2 diabetes who have cardiovascular disease regarding the impact on the occurrence of cardiovascular events if blood glucose is not adequately controlled. Therefore, when used appropriately under the guidance of a healthcare professional, it can effectively manage blood glucose levels and improve patients' health.
1 tablet per dose, taken twice daily. Adjust the dosage within the range not exceeding 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin per day. When administering only metformin or in combination with other medications, it is recommended to take 5 mg of empagliflozin twice daily (10 mg total daily) along with the existing metformin dosage. If tolerance is good, the dose of empagliflozin can be increased from 10 mg to 25 mg. This medication is to be administered with meals to minimize gastrointestinal side effects related to metformin.
This medication can cause a rare side effect known as severe lactic acidosis, so if symptoms such as sudden muscle pain, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, or weakness occur, seek medical advice immediately. When used with other diabetes treatments, hypoglycemia may occur, so blood glucose levels should be monitored frequently, and immediate action should be taken if symptoms appear. Patients with moderately to severely impaired kidney function or those in states that may lead to acute kidney injury should not take this medication. It should be avoided during acute illnesses such as severe infections, dehydration, impaired cardiac function, or acute myocardial infarction, and may need to be discontinued for a certain period before and after surgery. It is safest not to use this medication during pregnancy or breastfeeding. While taking this medication, regular monitoring of kidney function and blood glucose status is necessary, especially for elderly patients or those with compromised kidney function, who should exercise additional caution. Urinary tract infections or genital infections may occur, so notify healthcare providers immediately if related symptoms arise. Excessive alcohol consumption or nutritional imbalances may increase the risk of side effects, so it is advisable to avoid these conditions. Hypoglycemia symptoms may occur, so thorough blood glucose management is essential during irregular meals or intense exercise, and insulin or other antihyperglycemic agents may need to be adjusted as needed. This medication may affect fluid balance in the body, so if dehydration symptoms occur, stop taking it and consult a doctor. Regular checks of vitamin B12 levels and liver function through blood tests or health status evaluations are advisable. During treatment with this medication, if sudden weight loss, severe fatigue, fever, or pain occur, immediate medical attention should be sought.
