Effect on blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and prevention of cardiovascular events
This medication is used as an adjunct to diet and exercise to improve blood sugar control in adults with type 2 diabetes when used in combination with empagliflozin and metformin. It is particularly effective in patients whose blood sugar is not adequately controlled and may also help in treating type 2 diabetes patients with cardiovascular disease. This medication plays an important role in blood sugar management, aiding in the improvement of patients' health.
The recommended dosage for this medication is 1 tablet once, twice daily. Dosage should be determined based on the patient’s condition, not exceeding 25 mg of empagliflozin and 2000 mg of metformin. If adequate blood sugar control is not achieved with metformin alone or in combination with insulin, a recommended starting dosage is 5 mg of empagliflozin taken twice a day (totaling 10 mg) along with the existing metformin dosage. Good tolerance and additional blood sugar control is needed.
This medication may cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. Lactic acidosis is rare but can be fatal, so if symptoms occur, contact a doctor immediately. Additionally, when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, hypoglycemia may occur, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. Patients with allergies to any components of this medication or moderate to severe renal impairment should not take it. It should also not be administered in cases of acute kidney problems or specific diseases such as severe infections or heart failure. Patients undergoing tests with radiological contrast agents should temporarily discontinue this medication and resume only after renal function is confirmed normal post-examination. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medication 48 hours prior to the surgery and should not resume until kidney function has recovered post-surgery. Patients with poor nutritional status, liver dysfunction, or excessive alcohol intake should also take caution with this medication. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and women who could become pregnant should confirm this before use. Elderly patients may experience decreased kidney function, so regular kidney function tests are advised, and patients at risk of fluid loss should also exercise caution. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal upset, urinary tract infections, genital infections, and increased urination, so if symptoms occur, consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. When taken with other drugs that have strong blood sugar-lowering effects, dose adjustments may be required to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia. In case of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis may increase, so it should be taken precisely as directed by a doctor, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to a medical institution immediately. This medication is not recommended for children and caution is required when driving or operating machinery. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
