How to take

If adequate blood sugar control is not achieved with metformin alone or in combination with insulin, a recommended starting dosage is 5 mg of empagliflozin taken twice a day (totaling 10 mg) along with the existing metformin dosage. Precautions

This medication may cause a serious side effect known as lactic acidosis, so caution is necessary. Lactic acidosis is rare but can be fatal, so if symptoms occur, contact a doctor immediately. Additionally, when taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, hypoglycemia may occur, so blood sugar levels should be monitored closely. Patients with allergies to any components of this medication or moderate to severe renal impairment should not take it. It should also not be administered in cases of acute kidney problems or specific diseases such as severe infections or heart failure. Patients undergoing tests with radiological contrast agents should temporarily discontinue this medication and resume only after renal function is confirmed normal post-examination. Patients scheduled for surgery should stop taking this medication 48 hours prior to the surgery and should not resume until kidney function has recovered post-surgery. Patients with poor nutritional status, liver dysfunction, or excessive alcohol intake should also take caution with this medication. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding should not take this medication, and women who could become pregnant should confirm this before use. Elderly patients may experience decreased kidney function, so regular kidney function tests are advised, and patients at risk of fluid loss should also exercise caution. This medication may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal upset, urinary tract infections, genital infections, and increased urination, so if symptoms occur, consultation with healthcare professionals is necessary. When taken with other drugs that have strong blood sugar-lowering effects, dose adjustments may be required to minimize the risk of hypoglycemia. In case of overdose, the risk of lactic acidosis may increase, so it should be taken precisely as directed by a doctor, and any unusual symptoms should be reported to a medical institution immediately. This medication is not recommended for children and caution is required when driving or operating machinery. Lastly, this medication should be kept out of reach of children and stored in its original container for safety.
