Treatment for blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes and reduction of cardiovascular risk in chronic heart failure and kidney diseases
This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood sugar levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. Additionally, in patients with chronic heart failure, it helps reduce the risk of death and hospitalization due to cardiovascular diseases. It is also used in patients with chronic kidney disease to slow the progression of kidney function decline and reduce the risk of cardiovascular and kidney-related mortality. This drug can be administered alone or in combination with other standard treatments, enhancing the therapeutic effect for each condition. Overall, it is effectively used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, chronic heart failure, and chronic kidney disease.
This medication can be taken once daily at any time, regardless of food. The tablet should be swallowed whole.
The efficacy and safety of dapagliflozin in children under 18 years have not been established.
This medication should not be used in certain patients. Patients allergic to the main ingredient or additives, those with type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis, should avoid this medication due to potential risks. Moreover, it contains anhydrous lactose, making it unsuitable for patients with genetic conditions such as galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, or glucose-galactose malabsorption. Patients undergoing dialysis should also not use this medication. Patients with reduced fluid volume or kidney function issues should use this medication cautiously. It can lower blood pressure or temporarily worsen kidney function; therefore, elderly patients or those taking diuretics must be especially careful. Before starting this medication, evaluate fluid status and kidney function, and after administration, continuously monitor for symptoms of low blood pressure and kidney function. Patients with moderate to severe kidney impairment may experience reduced blood sugar control effectiveness. Common side effects of this medication include genital infections and urinary tract infections. Women and patients with a history of infections should be particularly cautious as the risk of reinfection may be higher. Hypoglycemia symptoms may occur, particularly if taken with insulin or sulfonylureas, increasing the risk of hypoglycemia. Symptoms of reduced fluid volume or dehydration have also been reported, so it is important to consult medical professionals immediately if dehydration symptoms occur. Rarely, serious metabolic disturbances like diabetic ketoacidosis may develop, requiring immediate medical attention if symptoms like nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, or breathing difficulties occur. Additionally, symptoms such as pain, swelling, or redness in the perineum indicate a serious infection like perineal necrosis, necessitating immediate treatment. This medication is not recommended for patients with severely impaired liver function. Elderly patients, those with low blood pressure, or patients on diuretics must be particularly cautious of blood pressure drops and reduced fluid volume. It is safest for pregnant or breastfeeding women to avoid this medication, and the safety and efficacy in children have not yet been established. This medication can interact with other drugs, so especially when taken with diuretics, insulin, or sulfonylureas, dosage adjustments may be necessary. In case of overdose, there are no specific antidotes; treatment should be symptomatic, following medical guidance. During the use of this medication, closely monitor for symptoms of hypoglycemia and infection, and consult medical staff immediately if any abnormal symptoms arise. Finally, it is important to keep this medication out of the reach of children and store it in its original container to maintain quality.
