Precautions

This medication is used to help control blood glucose and is employed in diabetes treatment. This drug can cause a rare side effect called severe lactic acidosis, so it should not be used in patients with poor kidney function or in serious conditions such as severe infections, dehydration, or heart failure. Care should be taken when using this drug with insulin or other blood glucose-lowering agents due to the risk of hypoglycemia. Patients with moderate to severe renal impairment, acute illnesses, or those scheduled for surgery should temporarily discontinue this medication and may resume after renal function recovers to normal. Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are advised not to take this medication. During treatment, urinary or genital infections may occur, so any signs of infection should be immediately reported to healthcare professionals. Additionally, in situations with a risk of fluid loss or dehydration, fluid status should be closely monitored, and medication should be discontinued if necessary. As vitamin B12 levels may decrease, it is advisable to regularly check vitamin B12 concentrations during prolonged use. Alcohol consumption may increase the risk of lactic acidosis, so excessive drinking should be avoided during treatment. In case of overdose, serious side effects may occur, so it is essential to adhere to the prescribed dose, and if abnormal symptoms arise, seek immediate medical attention. This medication is not recommended for children, and elderly patients should regularly check renal function and adjust doses as needed. Finally, regular blood tests and kidney function tests are important to ensure safety during the use of this medication.
