Precautions
This medication is a diabetes treatment that helps control blood sugar.
It is essential to ensure that kidney function is normal before using this medication. Patients with impaired kidney function or severe renal impairment should not use this medication.
Additionally, patients with liver impairment, heart failure, acute myocardial infarction, severe infection, or traumatic conditions should avoid this medication.
It is also advisable not to administer this medication to pregnant women or women who may become pregnant, as well as to patients who are malnourished or severely weakened.
This medication can rarely cause a dangerous condition known as lactic acidosis, so if symptoms such as shortness of breath, muscle pain, abdominal pain, or weakness occur, it is vital to notify a doctor immediately.
When used in conjunction with other diabetes medications or insulin, hypoglycemia may occur, hence patients should be aware of hypoglycemic symptoms and their management.
Regular blood tests to monitor kidney function and vitamin B12 levels are essential while using this medication.
If scheduled for tests using radioactive iodine contrast, this medication should be stopped 48 hours prior and resumed only after confirming normal kidney function following the tests.
For patients undergoing major surgery, this medication should also be discontinued 48 hours before surgery, and should resume only after confirming kidney function recovery.
Patients should avoid excessive alcohol intake while taking this medication, as alcohol may elevate the risk of side effects.
If skin blisters or severe joint pain occur during the use of this medication, it is necessary to consult medical staff immediately, and discontinuation may be required.
Elderly patients may experience decreased kidney function, thus requiring dosage adjustments and regular kidney function tests.
During the course of taking this medication, it is critical to monitor for symptoms of hypoglycemia, lactic acidosis, and liver dysfunction, and to consult a doctor immediately if any abnormal symptoms appear.
