Efficacy & effects

Improvement of blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes

  • Difficulty in blood glucose control in patients with type 2 diabetes
View approved original text

This medication is used in conjunction with diet and exercise to help control blood glucose levels in patients with type 2 diabetes. It is particularly prescribed when patients who have not previously received diabetes medication find it difficult to control blood sugar levels with monotherapy. Additionally, it is used when control is insufficient with metformin or sitagliptin, or when substituting for a combination therapy of these two medications. This drug also helps improve blood glucose control when used in combination with sulfonylureas or thiazolidinediones, or when combined with insulin. In other words, it is an effective medication for enhancing blood glucose control in combination with various existing therapies.

Precautions

This medication may cause serious allergic reactions; therefore, if symptoms such as skin rash, hives, or difficulty breathing occur after ingestion, it should be discontinued immediately and a doctor consulted. This medication carries the risk of inducing inflammation of the pancreas known as acute pancreatitis; if symptoms such as abdominal pain, vomiting, or loss of appetite develop during treatment, medical attention should be sought immediately. One of the ingredients in this medication should not be used in patients with severely impaired renal function, and caution is required in cases of poor kidney function or dehydration. Patients with heart conditions such as heart failure or acute myocardial infarction should avoid this medication. Prior to and following exams that use iodine contrast agents, this medication should be temporarily discontinued, and should only be resumed after confirming that kidney function is normal. It is safer for women who are pregnant, may become pregnant, or are breastfeeding not to take this medication. When prescribing to the elderly, regular monitoring of kidney function and dose adjustment may be necessary. Hypoglycemic symptoms may occur during treatment, so attention should be paid to symptoms of excessively low blood sugar (such as dizziness, cold sweat, headache, etc.). Excessive alcohol consumption should be avoided while taking this medication, as alcohol intake may increase the risk of side effects. This medication may need to be temporarily discontinued around the time of surgery, so it is important to inform medical personnel if surgery is planned. Some patients may experience side effects such as joint pain or skin rash; if unusual symptoms persist, consult a healthcare provider. It is important to have regular blood tests and kidney function tests while taking this medication to check for any abnormalities. In the event of an overdose, seek medical attention immediately for appropriate treatment; some ingredients may be removed through dialysis. The risk of hypoglycemia may increase when this medication is taken with other antidiabetic agents, so consult a healthcare provider regarding interactions with other medications being taken. Adhere to the prescribed dosage and regimen; do not arbitrarily discontinue or change the treatment.
