Improvement of chronic constipation symptoms
This medication is used to treat constipation symptoms in adult patients with chronic constipation who did not respond to laxatives.
This medication is taken orally and can be administered at any time of the day, regardless of meals. Adults should take 2 mg once daily. For elderly patients aged 65 and older, the initial dose is 1 mg once daily and can be increased to 2 mg once daily if necessary. For patients with severe renal impairment (GFR < 30 ml/min/1.73 m2) and severe liver impairment (Child-Pugh class C), the recommended dose is 1
This drug should not be used in certain patients. For instance, individuals with allergies to the active ingredient or additives should not take this medication. Additionally, patients with severe renal impairment requiring dialysis or structural intestinal issues or severe inflammation should not use this drug. Individuals who are genetically lactose intolerant should also avoid taking this medication. Patients with severe renal impairment should receive a reduced dose and be administered with caution. The safety of this medication has not been fully established in patients with other serious conditions such as liver, heart, lung, or neurological diseases, so caution is advised. Particularly, patients with arrhythmias or ischemic heart disease should use this drug carefully. It is also recommended that patients with severe liver disease receive a reduced dose. This drug should be taken with caution in conjunction with other medications that may affect heart rhythm. The most common side effects while taking this medication include headaches and gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, and diarrhea. These symptoms mainly occur early in the treatment and often resolve on their own over time. Other reported side effects include dizziness, tremor, palpitations, vomiting, dyspepsia, fatigue, etc. If new heart palpitations occur, a doctor should be consulted. Severe diarrhea may reduce the effectiveness of oral contraceptives, so it is recommended to use additional contraceptive methods. This drug has a relatively low potential for interactions with other medications, but caution is needed when taken with certain antifungals or heart-related medications. Additionally, drugs such as atropine may diminish the effect of this medication. The experience with the use of this medication during pregnancy is limited, and use during pregnancy is not recommended. Women of childbearing age should use effective contraceptive methods while taking this medication. It may excrete into breast milk, but it is expected to have little effect on the baby; however, it is not recommended. It is advisable not to use this medication for children or adolescents under 18 years of age. Overdose may cause symptoms such as headache, nausea, and diarrhea; appropriate treatment is necessary based on symptoms. Electrolyte replenishment may be needed in cases of fluid loss due to diarrhea and vomiting. This medication may cause dizziness and fatigue during the early stages of treatment, so caution is necessary when driving or operating machinery.
