Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunct treatment for partial seizures, improvement of fibromyalgia.
This medication is used to treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It can also be used as an adjunct for partial seizures in epilepsy patients, with or without secondary generalized symptoms. Furthermore, it is effective in alleviating the symptoms of fibromyalgia. Therefore, this drug helps in the treatment of various nerve-related pain and epilepsy.
This medication, as pregabalin, should be taken orally in divided doses twice a day, regardless of meals. 1. Neuropathic Pain - Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose of 150 mg per day. It can be increased to 300 mg per day after 3 to 7 days. If necessary, it can be further increased to a maximum of 600 mg per day at 7-day intervals. - Central Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose of 150 mg per day.
There is insufficient safety and efficacy data for children under 12 years and adolescents aged 12 to 17, so administration is not recommended.
This medication may increase the risk of suicidal thoughts or behavior, so careful monitoring for signs of depression, mood changes, or abnormal behavior is necessary during treatment. Patients with an allergy to any of this medication's components or with congenital lactose intolerance should not take it. Diabetic patients should be cautious, as weight gain may necessitate adjustments in the dosage of blood glucose control drugs. If symptoms of hypersensitivity, such as angioedema occur, the medication should be discontinued immediately. Elderly patients should be especially cautious in the initial phases of treatment due to the possibility of dizziness, drowsiness, or altered consciousness. If visual disturbances or changes in vision occur, consult a healthcare professional. When discontinuing this medication, withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, and anxiety may appear. Therefore, the discontinuation should be done according to medical advice. Patients with a history of substance abuse may be at risk for misuse or abuse of this medication, so careful assessment before use is required. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dosage adjustments. Patients with heart conditions should exercise caution when taking this medication. Concomitant use with opioid analgesics may enhance central nervous system depressant effects, necessitating caution. Patients with respiratory or neurological conditions, as well as the elderly, are at risk for severe respiratory depression and should take this medication with caution. Pregnant women should avoid this medication during early pregnancy due to the potential effects on the fetus, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. Breastfeeding women are advised against taking this medication, as it can be passed into breast milk. Care should be taken when driving or operating machinery, as dizziness or drowsiness may occur after taking this medication. Severe skin reactions may rarely occur, and if symptoms such as skin rash or swelling arise, stop taking the medication and consult a healthcare professional immediately. Overdose may result in confusion, drowsiness, and depression, and may require treatments such as blood dialysis if necessary. Keep this medication out of the reach of children and do not transfer it to other containers.
