Treatment of essential hypertension and heart failure (intolerance to ACE inhibitors), effect of reducing the risk of death after myocardial infarction
This medication is used to control blood pressure in patients with essential hypertension to improve health. Additionally, it helps alleviate symptoms of heart failure in patients with intolerance to ACE inhibitors, specifically those categorized as NYHA class II to IV. It has been shown to reduce the risk of death in stable patients with left ventricular dysfunction following myocardial infarction. Thus, this drug is effective in managing hypertension, treating heart failure, and reducing risk post-myocardial infarction.
1. Essential Hypertension - Adults: It is recommended to administer 80 mg orally once daily as Valsartan. - For patients not well controlled, the dose may be increased to 160 mg once daily or diuretics may be added. - If additional blood pressure reduction is necessary, it may be titrated up to a maximum of 320 mg once daily. - Elderly patients (75 years or older): Start at 40 mg once daily. - Renal impairment
Pediatric: Safety and efficacy in patients under 18 years of age have not been established.
This drug can cause serious damage to the fetus and newborn when taken during pregnancy, particularly in the second and third trimesters, so it should be discontinued immediately upon confirmation of pregnancy. This drug should not be used by individuals who are allergic to this medication or its components, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, nursing mothers, patients with severe liver impairment, and certain patients with kidney impairment. Elderly patients, patients with hyperkalemia, liver disease, and cardiovascular and kidney disorders should use this drug with caution and closely monitor for signs of hypotension or changes in kidney function. While taking this drug, side effects such as headache, dizziness, cough, diarrhea, and fatigue may occur, and rarely serious adverse reactions such as angioedema, hepatitis, or renal failure may manifest; thus, if unusual symptoms occur, medical consultation should be sought immediately. This drug can cause a sudden drop in blood pressure, so care must be taken to monitor for symptoms of hypotension at the start of treatment or when increasing the dose, and appropriate treatment should be obtained if necessary. Interaction with other medications is possible, so healthcare providers should be informed, especially when used in conjunction with potassium-sparing diuretics, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, or lithium preparations, and blood pressure, kidney function, and electrolyte levels should be regularly checked. This drug is not recommended for nursing mothers, and it is considered safe to discontinue breastfeeding while on this medication. The safety and efficacy in children and adolescents under 18 years of age have not been established, so its use is not advisable. In case of overdose, severe hypotension or altered consciousness may occur, necessitating immediate emergency response, and dialysis is not effective. Store this drug out of reach of children, and avoid transferring it to other containers as this could adversely affect quality.
