Treatment of peripheral and central neuropathic pain, adjunctive for partial seizures in epilepsy, relief of fibromyalgia.
This medication is used to effectively treat peripheral and central neuropathic pain in adults. It is also utilized as an adjunct for partial seizures in epilepsy patients, either with or without secondary generalized symptoms. Additionally, it helps in the treatment of fibromyalgia. Therefore, this drug is widely used for various neurological disorders and pain management.
This medication should be taken orally in divided doses twice daily without regard to meals. 1. Neuropathic Pain - Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose of 150 mg per day, which may be increased to 300 mg per day after 3 to 7 days, and if necessary, may be increased to a maximum of 600 mg at 7-day intervals. - Central Neuropathic Pain: Starting dose of 150 mg per day, which may be increased to 300 mg after one week.
Use is not recommended for children under 12 years and adolescents aged 12 to 17 due to insufficient safety and efficacy data.
This medication may cause mental health issues such as suicidal impulses or behaviors, so patients must be closely monitored for mood changes or abnormal behaviors while taking it. Patients with hypersensitivity to this drug should not use it. Diabetic patients may experience weight gain while taking this drug and may need to adjust the dosage of blood glucose controlling medications. If allergic reactions, such as angioedema, occur, discontinue this medication immediately. Elderly patients should take special care at the beginning of treatment due to increased dizziness and drowsiness, as there is a risk of falls or injuries. This medication may cause visual disturbances such as blurred vision; consult a doctor if symptoms occur. Abrupt discontinuation can lead to withdrawal symptoms such as insomnia, headache, and anxiety, so dosage should be gradually reduced under physician guidance. Due to the risk of drug abuse, patients with a history of substance abuse should use this medication cautiously and be monitored for signs of misuse. Patients with impaired kidney function may require dosage adjustments. Patients with heart disease should be cautious when taking this drug as it may increase the risk of heart failure. Concurrent use with central nervous system depressants or opioid analgesics may increase the risk of respiratory depression; caution is advised during co-administration. During early pregnancy, there may be a risk of fetal deformities, so it should not be used unless necessary, and women of childbearing age should use effective contraception. Breastfeeding women should consult a doctor as this drug may be transmitted through breast milk, potentially requiring them to stop breastfeeding. This drug may cause dizziness and drowsiness; caution is needed while driving or operating hazardous machinery. Severe skin reactions may occur rarely, so if unusual symptoms such as skin rashes or swelling appear, stop taking the medication immediately and consult healthcare providers. In case of overdose, symptoms may include altered consciousness, drowsiness, and depression; seek immediate medical attention, and renal replacement therapy such as dialysis may be required.
