Treatment of herpes simplex and shingles (acute pain) and improvement of chickenpox
This medication is used to treat and prevent infections caused by herpes simplex virus, including primary and recurrent genital herpes, as well as infections occurring on the skin and mucous membranes. It is particularly effective in alleviating acute pain associated with herpes zoster virus infections. However, its efficacy for postherpetic neuralgia has not been clearly demonstrated. It is also used in the treatment of chickenpox in children aged over 2 years. Thus, it is effective for treating various types of viral infections and helps improve the patient's symptoms.
1. For the treatment of herpes simplex virus infection, administer 200 mg of acyclovir 5 times a day at 4-hour intervals for 5 days; treatment may be extended for severe primary infections. 2. In severely immunocompromised patients or those with gastrointestinal absorption disorders, the dose can be increased to 400 mg per dose or the route can be changed to intravenous injection. 3. To prevent infection in immunocompetent patients, administer 200 mg 4 times a day.
1. Children aged 2 years and older should receive doses similar to those for adults. 2. Children under 2 years should receive half the adult dose. 3. For the treatment of chickenpox in children aged 2 years and older, administer 20 mg per kg of body weight (maximum 800 mg) 4 times daily for 5 days, as soon as the chickenpox rash appears.
This medication should not be used in patients who have allergies to this medication or its components, or have had hypersensitivity reactions to valacyclovir. Caution is required when used in patients with poor kidney function, as neurological symptoms may more easily manifest. Patients with impaired liver function should also be cautious, as there is a risk of worsening liver function when using this medication. Young infants and children should use this medication carefully, and particularly in neonates or low birth weight infants, its safety has not been sufficiently established, so it should only be used when necessary. Elderly patients are likely to have reduced kidney function, which can lead to increased blood concentration of this medication and more frequent adverse reactions, thus requiring careful adjustment of dosage and intervals. During treatment with this medication, serious allergic reactions such as anaphylactic shock can rarely occur; if symptoms like blood pressure drop, difficulty breathing, or chest tightness arise, usage should be stopped immediately, and appropriate treatment should be sought. Hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rash, fever, blisters, urticaria, and severe dermatitis may occur, and medication should be discontinued if these symptoms appear. Neurological side effects have been reported, including altered consciousness, disorientation, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, drowsiness, and anxiety, particularly in elderly patients or those with impaired kidney function. The risk of renal toxicity may increase when used concomitantly with medications affecting kidney function, so caution is needed when using in combination. This medication is most effective when taken early in the course of symptoms, ideally within 5 days of skin manifestation for herpes zoster, and within 3 days of onset for chickenpox. Adequate hydration is critical during the treatment period; especially in high-dose therapy, it is important to drink plenty of water to prevent dehydration and reduce the risk of renal toxicity. This medication should only be used in pregnant or potentially pregnant women when the benefits are deemed to outweigh the risks, and breastfeeding should be discontinued during the course of treatment. Overdosage may result in serious symptoms such as agitation, coma, seizures, and lethargy, and may cause kidney damage; in such cases, immediate consultation with medical personnel is required, and blood dialysis may be needed. Caution is needed when engaging in activities that carry risks, such as driving or operating machinery, as side effects like altered consciousness may occur.
Urticaria, severe swelling (edema), tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, cold sweat, paleness, anaphylactic shock, anaphylaxis-like reactions, toxic epidermal necrolysis (Lyell's syndrome), Stevens-Johnson syndrome (mucocutaneous syndrome), severe rash with high fever, blisters, skin peeling, pain in oral/ocular mucosa, jaundice, hepatitis, liver dysfunction, sudden and severe headache, thunderclap headache, seizures, altered consciousness, visual disturbances.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication is sensitive to light and should be stored in a container that protects it from light. Additionally, it should be kept in a cool, dry place at or below 25 degrees Celsius to maintain its efficacy.
