Treatment of gastrointestinal diseases such as gastric and duodenal ulcers, and gastritis
This medication is used to treat stomach and duodenal ulcers, gastritis, Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, and other gastrointestinal disorders. It also alleviates symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease and helps prevent ulcers that may occur after surgery. It plays a role in preventing or treating gastric and duodenal ulcers caused by the use of NSAIDs. It is also utilized as a pre-anesthetic medication to prevent Mendelson's syndrome. This medication is effective for the treatment and prevention of various gastrointestinal disorders.
Typically, the medication is orally administered as 2 tablets twice a day, regardless of meals, in the morning and before bedtime. 1) For gastric and duodenal ulcers: Administer 2 tablets twice a day or 4 tablets once a day before bedtime. In particular, for duodenal ulcer patients, taking 4 tablets twice a day in the morning and before bedtime can achieve higher treatment rates. This combination therapy also has the same dosage to prevent ulcers or for the long-term use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Generally, conditions arising from the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs typically heal within 4-8 weeks, but healing times may vary by patient. For recurrent ulcer patients who showed excellent results with the short-term therapy, a maintenance dose of 2 tablets once daily at bedtime is recommended. 2) For gastroesophageal reflux disease: During 8 weeks, 2 tablets twice daily or 4 tablets once daily before bedtime are administered. However, in severe cases of gastroesophageal reflux disease, the dose may be increased to 4 tablets four times daily. 3) For Zollinger-Ellison syndrome: Begin treatment with 2 tablets three times a day as an initial dose, which may be increased as necessary. In severe cases, as directed by a physician, daily doses of ranitidine may be increased up to 6 g. 4) For peptic ulcers, acute stress ulcers, and upper gastrointestinal bleeding due to acute mucosal lesions: When oral administration is possible, switch from injection to oral dosing with 2 tablets twice a day. 5) For pre-anesthetic medication (to prevent Mendelson syndrome): 2 tablets are administered 2 hours before the induction of anesthesia. It is also good practice to administer 2 tablets the night before surgery.

Patients who have experienced allergic reactions to this medication or its components, those with a history of acute porphyria, patients who have undergone upper gastrointestinal surgery, pregnant women or those who may become pregnant, premature infants and newborns, and patients on potassium-restricted diets should also refrain from taking this medication. Patients with impaired liver function or a history of drug allergies, the elderly, patients with a history of kidney disease, and patients taking non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs should use this medication with caution, particularly since it can mask gastric cancer symptoms. Therefore, patients with gastric ulcers or middle-aged patients who present new dyspeptic symptoms should have malignancy ruled out prior to treatment. Patients with Helicobacter pylori infection in gastric or duodenal ulcers should receive concomitant treatment to eradicate the bacteria, and special caution is needed for patients in critical care, those with hypophosphatemia, and patients with swallowing difficulties due to the possible risk of complications from this medication. Rarely, anaphylaxis or hypersensitivity reactions such as skin rashes, hives, or angioedema may occur, so if symptoms develop, administration should be stopped immediately and medical advice should be sought. Blood-related abnormalities such as reversible leukopenia and thrombocytopenia have been reported rarely, and symptoms such as liver dysfunction, arrhythmia, gastrointestinal symptoms, neuropsychiatric disturbances, musculoskeletal pain, and skin rashes may also occur; immediate reporting of unusual symptoms is necessary. Long-term use is not recommended and regular monitoring of blood, liver, and kidney function is required during treatment. Dizziness or drowsiness may occur during the use of this medication, so it is advisable to avoid driving or operating hazardous machinery.
