Improves blood sugar control in type 2 diabetes
This medication helps patients with type 2 diabetes who have difficulty controlling blood sugar levels through diet and exercise alone. The two ingredients, glimepiride and metformin, work together to lower blood sugar levels and improve blood sugar control. This helps facilitate better management of blood sugar levels. When used in conjunction with diet and exercise, the blood sugar control effect can be enhanced. This medication plays an important role in improving blood sugar control and assisting in diabetes management.
This medication is administered once or twice daily before meals or with meals. Typically, treatment starts at a low dose, and the dosage can be adjusted based on the medications the patient is currently taking and blood sugar levels. In clinical trials, the initial daily dose was glimepiride/metformin hydrochloride 2mg/500mg, and the dose can be gradually increased to glimepiride/metformin hydrochloride 8mg/2000mg based on blood sugar monitoring results.
This medication may pose a risk of severe lactic acidosis or hypoglycemia, therefore, if there is a rapid decline in kidney function or symptoms of dehydration, use should be temporarily halted and you should consult a physician. Use is contraindicated for patients with kidney function below 45 mL/min/1.73 m², and caution is required when used with drugs that can cause changes in kidney function. Additionally, because it may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases, it is crucial to discuss the risks and benefits of this medication with your healthcare provider in relation to other treatments. It should not be administered to certain patient populations, including those with insulin-dependent diabetes, severe liver dysfunction, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and those with severe kidney impairment. For patients or situations at high risk of hypoglycemia, careful monitoring is needed from the beginning of treatment. Irregular eating, intense exercise, and alcohol consumption may increase the risk of hypoglycemia. This medication may cause gastrointestinal symptoms (such as diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain), but these are typically transient and can be alleviated by taking it with meals or gradually increasing the dosage. Rarely, allergic reactions, blood abnormalities, vitamin B12 deficiency, and liver function abnormalities may occur, so if any unusual symptoms arise, contact a doctor immediately. During treatment, regular monitoring of blood sugar, kidney function, and blood tests should be conducted, especially in the elderly, who should be cautious of declining kidney function. Because this medication can interact with other drugs, consult your healthcare provider before starting or stopping any new medications. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should not use this medication; switching to insulin therapy for blood sugar control is recommended. Safety in children and adolescents has not been sufficiently established, therefore extra caution is advised when prescribing to minors. In the event of an overdose, severe hypoglycemia or lactic acidosis may occur, so if symptoms appear, seek appropriate medical care immediately. This medication does not cause weight gain and is beneficial in maintaining blood sugar control and reducing the risk of diabetes complications with long-term use. Caution is advised when driving or operating machinery as symptoms such as hypoglycemia or dizziness may occur.
Not everyone experiences these, and they can vary from person to person.
This medication should be stored in a sealed container to prevent air exposure and kept at a temperature between 1 to 30 degrees Celsius. Proper storage helps maintain the medication's effectiveness and prevents degradation.
